Not exactly as cut and dry as that. From Yahoo Finance:
"Published on Wednesday, the proposed tightening requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) could cut 688,000 able-bodied adults with no dependents from food stamps, according to the agency’s latest estimate. Currently, over 36 million Americans receive SNAP benefits.
To be eligible for SNAP, adults need to work 20 hours per week to receive over three months of benefits within a three-year span."
In other words, if you are an able-bodied adult you have to be willing to work to receive benefits.
And please don't think I have no sympathy or cannot understand. My family had to apply for food stamps a couple of times. I am handicapped and my husband was laid off. Those food stamps truly were a blessing for us. But it is like my husband has said, our taxes paid for the right to accept them under extraordinary, temporary conditions, but talkng them shouldn't be a continuous way of life.
