I cannot stress this enough. How in god's name is that boat still afloat? That much ice would surely take a devastating toll on its hull.

They are pretty resilient. I mean it is not moving either so that probably helps. We would get ice on Navy ships and pound it off with rubber mallets and such. But unless you are hitting ice bergs they can handle quite a bit of freezing. They just get really cold inside when they are made of steel.

Well, that's a relief, if it were made of iron, it'd break, and if it were made of wood, it'd probably rot... I think? It might actually preserve it. I'm not actually all that well-versed on the effects of cold weather on wood. But, we're here for a meme, and not boat physics.

Even the wood hulls have a treatment to waterproof them. Salt water is highly corrosive we used to have to clean in the Navy all the time to keep rust away and you know what we used a lot? We called it bug juice cherry it is Kool aid just a generic form. It took off rust like you would not believe. Got a rusty fitting put some cherry kool aid in a bucket and use some elbow grease boom came right off. Modern day boats are pretty resilient and the ones in the colder water are usually treated for cold weather like some aircraft are special paints etc. This particular one looks to be cause by a flash freeze storm. Like a severe blizzard that hit fast and hard that is the only way it gets that bad unless the owner is extremely lazy lol.

The Same Global Warming that is Causing the Polar caps to EXPAND? THAT KIND OF WARMING?

GO Look at Earth data.NASA.GOV & search Unexpected Ice the Polar caps are increasing in Size, Where the Hell is the Warmth ? rising Temperatures don't increase Ice Volume!

At the beginning of the movie The Day After Tomorrow (2004), the main character did explain how rising sea levels could alter the Atlantic current and cause cooling on our east coast. I'm not saying the entire movie was accurate, but that particular bit is backed by science.
3 ups, 5y,

I saw the Movie, what the Main character Didn't Understand was Water has the Same Identical Displacement value as Ice, Meaning one Gallon of Ice Displaces the same amount of water as ocean as One gallon of seawater does.

You can do the experiment in a cup at home get a cup put some water in it about 1/2 filled Put at least 4 cubes of ice in it measure the water Line ( Level ) after the Ice Melts take a Measurement of the water line You'll see IT HAS Not Even Moved a millimeter, Only People in the US are DUMB enugh to Buy into that whole the polar caps are Melting sea Levels are gonna rise BALONEY!
[deleted]

hey Bud, i'm sorry but i think you're wrong on this one. the rise in sea levels isn't due to a difference in volume of ice vs. water. my understanding is that the ocean itself expands in volume when it warms. another reason is that most of the Antarctic ice sheet and a lot of the Arctic ice sheet are above the current sea level, so when they melt, that's extra volume added to the sea. measurements over several decades have shown that the seas are creeping up the shores, so regardless of the basis of it, rising seas are a fact.
2 ups, 5y,

the Sea levels are Not affected by PRECISE IDENTICAL VOLUMES Of Displacement.

Whether it it be ICE or Sea WATER the Ocean Doesn't care, if 98% of the Polar caps melted the same Amount of Water would be in the Ocean

sea water Melted DISPLACES Exactly what ice does the Laws of Physics Dictate that Ocean Levels CANNOT RISE Because of Melting ICE and on Top of that VOLUMETRIC FACT the Polar caps Have Not receded Since 1979 so the Exact Identical Amount of Ice is there right Now as was 4 DECADES Ago!

Don't BUY this Global warming GARBAGE HEAP! think about the Guy pushing this Idea, he WASTES MORE RESOURCES than 99.99% of other people in the US

he has NO concern about Global warming at All but he does enjoy a few HUNDRED Extra MILLION Every year Because of the DUMB Theory he Pulled out of thin air.

i'm paying attention, but you've got to think it through, my friend. if one hundred (or fifty, or ten, or whatever) percent of the ice caps melted, the seas would rise BECAUSE MOST OF THAT ICE IS CURRENTLY ABOVE SEA LEVEL. WHEN IT MELTS, IT RUNS (DOWNHILL) INTO THE SEA TO CREATE NEW VOLUME. DISPLACEMENT OF ICE BY WATER IS NOT THE PROPOSED BASIS OF RISING SEA LEVELS.
2 ups, 5y,
1 reply
It is Simply an Exchange of one for the other you see if the Ice Actually were Melting which it is Not yes you would have More water but in turn you have Less Ice so NO the Sea levels Won't rise because some Ice Melts,

Now do you get it It is just Exchanging one Displacement for another If the Ice were melting the Displacement Volume remains the Same! ice melts = more water at the same time it = Less Ice So NO Change in Displacement. Do You get it ?
[deleted]

that's not the point, Bud. the climate change argument has nothing to do with ice in the oceans melting. it has to do with 1) ocean water expanding at higher temps and 2) ice that's NOT in the oceans melting and so becoming part of the oceans. water volume + NEW water volume = MORE WATER VOLUME.

You do realize the Oceans contain OVER 350+ QUINTILLION Gallons of water? the idea that adding a few gallons is going to cause such a Drastic sea Level rise that it Will IMPACT Every continent on Earth is Absurd! There are OVER 500 BILLION Fish in the ocean, if they All take a Leak Simultaneously al gore will be Swimming in Fish Piss/ Ocean Se water Levels that came up 9,800 FEET!

Its just Absurd this idea that the Oceans are gonna OVER TAKE WHOLE Countries.

Not Happening.
[deleted]
0 ups, 5y
well, if it's over 350+ quintillion gallons, and it expands just a percent or two from warming, that's several quintillion extra gallons. and then those few gallons too from the polar melting. some countries (and states like florida) are very flat overall, so it wouldn't take much of a rise in sea level to submerge large areas.

there are a lot of boneheads working on the problem, i'm sure, cause there always are. but the few smart ones seem certain that the trajectory is looking bad ) :

so i did a little reading on how much water expands above 4 degrees C, then i did a crude calculation based on the idea that the ocean might expand in volume by just one fifth of one percent over the next one hundred years. that one fifth of a percent expansion would create an increase in ocean depth of about twenty feet. that'd mean a big change in shorelines all around the world. the average elevation of florida, according to wikipedia, is about 100 feet. all of her coastal cities would be underwater if the oceans rose by 20 feet.

Well, if you look at this page Below I am sure you would Consider these guys to be "Smart Boneheads" as you said, they state that the sea levels have risen an average of 8 inches since 1950 in FLORIDA the article then goes on to say ocean Levels rising is accelerating and now they're seeing on average an increase of 1 inch every 3 years,

So by their Calculations the Ocean will rise a TOTAL of Less than 5 Feet in the Next 100 Years

Do you realize you have the Ocean rising more than 4 TIMES FASTER than " Smart Bonehead" Scientists do?

https://sealevelrise.org/states/florida/?gclid=CjwKCAiAob3vBRAUEiwAIbs5Tv1SHuOUEIieKKGGZEPQ3ps2wKRli6eYO0Xdf9EERCEexVLqbsU9EBoClAMQAvD_BwE
[deleted]
0 ups, 5y
ah but there's the thing about acceleration, Bud. it accelerates. it's increasing by 1 inch every three years right now, but if the rate continues to increase over the next 100 years, as you describe yourself, the net change can be much greater than three feet. in other words, acceleration curves slope upward exponentially.

it's hard to be exact with this kind of non-linear effect, but the net increase should be more than three feet. maybe not twenty, but maybe even a bit more. i tried to make a conservative estimate, but i know it will be off at least a little.
[deleted]
0 ups, 5y
and even if it did take four hundred years to rise by twenty feet, that's still a problem.

If you ask the Dictionary

Climate :
Noun
the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.
"our cold, wet climate"

Yes

And weather is

weather
/ˈwɛðə/
noun
the state of the atmosphere at a particular place and time as regards heat, cloudiness, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc.
"if the weather's good we can go for a walk

The difference?

Well Weather is the short term observation of Weather Phenomenons and the Climate is that of "over a long period" one
