It's whether they should be and still be able to self identify as Christians who are legitimately following Christ's teachings, because if they are claiming to be following Christ's teachings - them supporting the murder of the unborn would null and void that claimed identity.

Very well said. Calling yourself a pro-choice Catholic is like calling yourself a Muslim or Jew who eats pork. While anyone can call themselves anything, that doesn't mean that's actually what they are. It is against basic Catholic doctrine to support abortion. Period.
