Thing is, having dealt with people like that IRL and online, a recurring pattern emerges of not just clinginess born of desperate need, but one where they use such as an excuse to get attention - even exaggerating to get more of it, and exploiting that angle as a form of trapping, even gaining a sort of control in a way. Any offers of better channels for guidance and assistance are routinely ignored while they wallow in their extruded misery, offering it to others to pull on their sympathy strings. In other words, they LIKE their torment - a badge that makes them special and worthy of seeking undivided attention in a vampiristic way from those willing to indulge them for the sake of being helpful.

On account of having dealt with way too many who slather on the pain for the sake of drama and also those who like to get itchy about it like Justine did, I've taken to shoving them off when the tune starts sounding familiar. Those who truly suffer tend to not wave it around like pom poms at the homecoming game. By offering drama queens an ear, it provides them the opportunity and justification to slather it on in bright neon, sinking their teeth ever deeper in an addict's quest for pity.
