We cannot treat the US the same as some of those small nations without those issues. We also have the 2nd Amendment.

The Second Amendment simply does not provide for unlimited gun rights. The 2008 SCOTUS case D.C. v. Helper ruled that the 2nd Amendment provides a right to own handguns in the home for self-defense. However, much else remains unresolved. Under 2nd Amendment jurisprudence as it currently exists, assault weapons may be banned.
