Not counting the Spanish colonists, who were catholic, and were here a good 100 years before the Puritans... I'd say by your standards the Protestants colonists were "doomed" from the start. Not only that, but I assume you're not making the wildly inaccurate statement that the colonists weren't already drunken, violent, diseased individuals as well. After all, they did take land from the natives, whether they were truly savage or not, and brought alcoholism and disease to hasten their demise.
