It wasn't an exam. The teacher wrote out a long algebraic equation on the blackboard and ordered me to do it in front of the class. Punishment for making him look foolish in front of other teachers a few days before. I stood there and stood there not doing anything while he made cracks that had the class laughing at me until I wrote out the answer with no work.
He pulled that show me your work line on me, but I just kept bringing it back to the answer being right until he gave up. Never bothered me again.
I can understand showing your work when your first learning that type of math problem, so that the student is understanding how he/she got to the answer, but if you can do it in your head and still get the right answer, you shouldn’t be penalized.
Lol. Yeah, I think too much attention is being spent on “showing work”. Like maybe you should show your work if you’re having a hard time getting to the answer in your head? I don’t know. I’m not a teacher so... :-)
