I see memes copied EXACTLY every single day. They either need to enforce the no repost rule or remove that rule. There is one on the front page right now actually. The ONLY change is the color of the text. They pick and choose honestly.

Face You Make Robert Downey Jr Meme | WHEN I SEE MEMES FROM TWO YEARS AGO ON THE FRONT PAGE | image tagged in memes, face you make robert downey jr | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Yeah, I can’t even bring myself to repost a meme onto the repost stream from somewhere else anymore. I’ve only done it a few times. And if I can’t change the text to make a meme funnier, or really expand on it, (like I did with the butter roller meme), I don’t even want to touch it. Creativity is the key, and if it doesn’t make me laugh, it’s not worth posting...

I gain no satisfaction from copying something. I also feel kind of bad when I realize an idea I had has been thought of before. I guess that's to be expected though. I haven't posted a lot lately, but I think I have couple of good ideas inspired in comments. Gonna have to take some time to do a little editing.

On the other hand, if you make a meme with the same thought/joke as one posted one or two years ago, odds are it's a new meme to many, who may not otherwise see the old one.

I see memes called "reposts" all the time, but it's the first time I'VE seen them, and that's all that matters to me.

I'd be cautious not to associate what random users say with what Imgflip has decided. Random users will sometimes call something a repost in the comments that we do not consider a repost, so those users can be ignored insofar as our rules are concerned.

I only think it's a repost when it is an EXACT copy job. Because I do see a whole lot of that. That aside I don't really care that people do it, but rather that some people get their memes pulled while others do not! They aren't consistent about it!

Gonna add, I don't think it's possible for the mods to know every single meme and when it was posted previously. So really it's impossible to really enforce this with accuracy.

It's not too hard if you actually look at every single meme, but there are thousands a day so you can't check them all. Exact copy reposts can usually be found via google image search or by searching the text of the image.

That's about what I was saying. How can they POSSIBLY be regulated fairly? It's literally impossible. And you can't count on flags. People would flag everything just for spite as they do in the side streams. So really, you can't regulate reposts effectively. I don't give a rip if someone reposts. But there are a lot of issues it seems lately. People don't think they are getting a fair shake.

Flags are very helpful to moderators! Flagged images will not necessarily be unfeatured, it just forces moderators to take another look. Worst case when people spam the flag button maliciously is mods get annoyed having to go through and ignore them all.

I never really knew that so thanks for telling me. I always assumed that there were already a lot of flags just due to the high traffic on the site.

Me too. And comments are the best to get inspiration from. Sometimes I’ll get an idea from doing a google search to find an image for a comment. You never know what you’ll find...

Me too! I get my best ideas by total accident.

You could change the text or image slightly.
I know if you straight up repost the exact same image and text they will likely take it down.
Although I have got away with just changing the text colour, during repost your own memes week.

I just had some old memes that would fit perfect in some of these new streams. Ok, I’ll try the little changes bit. Thanks!😃👍

Check out the full details in our submission guidelines that show up when you submit your image.

This would be a repost if you re-submitted the identical image to the exact same stream.

But not to a different stream?

I think part of the idea is, what if we want to resubmit an old meme we made to a new audience? Especially if it didn't gain any traction the first time and we think it could do better.

You'd currently have to remake the meme, but we don't have any restrictions on reposting it to a different stream. If it turns into an issue in the future we may have to modify the rules or unify images across streams somehow, but there haven't really been issues yet.

So in other words, any political ones we made and submitted in Fun, before the different streams were added, could be resubmitted in Politics now, but not in Fun without remaking it from scratch?

I mean, there must be one person who made the original image

Reposting an idea is not what we consider a repost on Imgflip, since ideas are always reused, remixed, and modified over time. Pretty much all creativity reuses ideas from somewhere. It's mainly when someone just straight up clicks "copy" and then "paste" that we try to avoid, since no creativity is involved in that.

Unless it’s funny enough not to need it. I guess it’s truly original if you took the pic too...
