Shhh, what do you think you're doing bringing up truth like that??? Snowflakes are going to melt over this one...oh no, too late! It's such a joke that this idea is even being proposed. What's worse is that young lemming snowflakes seem to be convinced that 'old white guys' who founded the US invented slavery. BWAH HAHA HA HA! Newsflash, all throughout history, in every part of the world, civilizations conquered one another and enslaved those left standing. But, but, that doesn't make it right! Shoo, get back to your safe space and start game planning your outrage against the African native, Dutch, and British slave traders.

Only Democrats owned slaves. Northern Democrats were pro-slavery. Only Democrats should pay reparations.

So.... everyone's just fine with him calling Blacks Negros?

Why would you immediately jump to the conclusion he used it in a derogatory manner?
"Negro" means black in Spanish and Portuguese. I assume he used this Latin-based word in the meme to differentiate between the black-skinned majority populace of the continent from the brown-skinned Africans that inhabit Libya, Egypt and other northern parts of Africa because the former have been more often targeted by slave dealers over the last 300 years.

Come on, the OP wasn't hablando Español, he was talking English, and they do use the word in English as well as other even less savory varities of it.

Nor was he referring to Negroids of Sub Saharan Africa as to differentiate them from the Caucasoids of northern Africa (which are tan, or olive toned, if you must, not brown).

He even spelled "Portugese" wrong.

Fella couldn't get the name of the traders right he sure ain't getting all linguistical on Negro.

Oh, and I've used "Negro" or "Negroid" myself, but the context indicates how.

Aha, well why in the name of god, do you use a Spanish word in an English sentence. And instead of using that word, why didn't he just say black African? It saves you from using a Word with such a Racist history and I find you attempts to defend this to be a bit... disappointing.

Funny how we used to teach kids that "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" and then today ... using the wrong f**king pronoun can get you in hot water because it makes someone "feel" inferior.

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Apparently, Mrs. Roosevelt was wrong. Consent isn't needed for today's weak ass generation.

"Negro" doesn't have a racist history. It is literally a word that derived from "Negroid", the scientific term to describe this race, like "Mongoloid" and "Caucasoid". The etymology of words used to describe the "Negroid" race is full of terms that are passe, but not racist."Ni**er" does have racist overtones, but only in the context of whites using it in a derogatory manner. But even whites can use the term so long as they're in hip hop mode. Honestly, no one knows what to say anymore without offending someone. It's getting ridiculous. It won't be long before everyone is offended by the term "black". I always thought "black" was offensive, in that these people aren't even black, and the word is always likened to darkness, sin, and evil in literature e.g., a black heart. For that matter, I don't think I've ever seen anyone who was actually white or yellow either. Funny how white is ok, but if I call an Asian "yellow" I'm racist.
0 ups, 4y
Actually "Negroid" is derived from "Negro"

I agree with the rest, and if I must, say it 'black' or so-called black, same with "white."
4 ups, 5y
Okay, intresting lingustic history. Doesn't erase the fact that Negro is generally used, nowadays, in a degretory mannar. Why would you even do that?

"It won't be long before everyone is..
. bla bla bla"

Yeah I don't really care what you think will happen. I am talking about here and now.

You do know that there was a time that "negro" was considered the politically correct word to use, right? That's because it's a shortened form of the anthropological term "negroid" (now also considered offensive") as opposed to "Caucasoid" (European) and "Mongoloid" (Asian).

This was used in place of the N-word or "colored". Then "negro" fell out of favor and "black" became politically correct. After that, "black" likewise fell out of favor and "African-American" started erroneously being used. Erroneous because it's not actually a very politically correct term, which people started realizing, and so they slowly brought back "black", though some still refuse to give up the "African-American" label.

"You do know that there was a time that "negro" was considered the politically correct word to use, right"

You do now there was a time when slavery was considered ghod and Moral?

Again, intresting lingustic history, but today when someone says Negro, you don't immediatly think that latin word, but see it as something more degretory

You misunderstand, when I say "negro" was considered the politically correct word to use, I mean /black people/ considered it that way. If you called them "colored" or "black", they would get offended, let alone the words actually /intended/ to be derogatory.
4 ups, 5y,

Again, /fascinating/ History lesson, but times change and the usage of the word Negro is considered to be usually degretory
0 ups, 4y
Like with The American Negro college Fund?
Same deal with "colored," but we still have the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

But otherwise pretty much yes to what you said.

And my point is that what's considered "derogatory" changes based on the whim of the people, and what people /choose/ to be offended by.

The thing about most people who try to deliberately offend others is that if they don't get a reaction, they get bored and quit. It's a behavior pattern that existed LONG before the internet and internet trolls. Thus the phrase "offense can only be taken, not given". People /choosing/ to be offended is a big part of the problem.
3 ups, 5y
Thats interesting and all, while I agree that offense requires two to play tango, we should lerhaps crub the tendency to say such racist and Degretory Terms as Negro for tge simple fact that they are racist and Degretory. And it might happen that in a hundred years Negro becomes main stream again, but untill then I'd rather not paint myself a racist by using the word. And perhaps people don't choose to be offended by it. It doesn't change the favt that there will be people who think that Blacks are inferior and therefore refer to them as such. The usage of the word is usually a symptom of the person simply being racist. And you can tell me I call anyone who opposes me a racist and I shouldn't whine about it. And maybe you'd be right. Or maybe, he really is a racist and ignoring him won't solve the problem.

"African-American" (and all the other Hyphenated-American Bull Flop) became the norm circa 1988, when Jesse Jackson was running a money laundering.. er, I mean Presidential Primary Campaign...

A Reporter (I think, or was it at a debate) asked Michael Dukakis (The son of Immigrants) about his experience as a 'Greek American'... and Jackson flipped a Nut, going off about why no asks about the 'African American Experience' and it snowballed from there

Hm, you may be onto something. Twice a year the doctor's office has me re-submit
personal info. Invariably there is that question as to race, and I am never allowed to just circle "White", only "Caucasian". As that is a Latin-derived term, one which could have easily been substituted with "White European" it appears I have been discriminated against without even realizing it! Thanks for the clarity! I will have to contact the ACLU immediately and seek help in rectifying this unforgivable wrong.

Caucasians are indigenous not only to Europe, but the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, India, and depending on if you recognize Dravidians, and Melanesians as separate races or not, extending all the way to Australia as well as, yes, Caucasia itself,,,
