We have 2 universities, 2 professional football ( soccer) teams, 1 championship winning ice hockey team ( Sheffield steelers ).
We are also home to bands like The arctic monkeys, pulp, Def Leppard, the human league, heaven 17, abc , the Thompson twins.
But historically famous for our multitude of steel mills and innovations (crucible process & stainless steel).
The Luftwaffe bombed Sheffield many times in WW2 because it had such industrial value.
A testament to how tough Sheffield steel is that when Iraq where building their supergun in the late 80s the designer ( Gerald Bull, a Canadian ) said there was only one place on earth that made steel strong enough to stand the pressures of such a large artillery piece.. Sheffield. ( the barrel of the gun was made at Sheffield forgemasters plant.. but fortunately never made it to its destination ).
