Not only do the Amish still use outhouses, but they're shared with the community, so eau de extra enriched is something they have to deal with.
This is different, but when we were in hs we went to the VA grounds in WV to visit an uncle who was a Dr there. Across the street from the housing, there was a ditch, so I went looking for tadpoles or fish or whatev, and yards away, there was a series of square pools filled with a white sort of sludge and a disctinct organic odor that made me not want to get any closer - not that they wee overwhelmingly bad. There were rails, cat walk type of walkways, and the hum of machinery, pumps and wahtnot. I have no idea what they were.
