When we consider that chemicals in plastics(&pesticides) can drop a man's sperm count,that the plastic island off the coast of California is now bigger than Texas, & that American men's sperm count has gone down by 60% since '40s it seems that less plastic in our environment would be something EVERY man would eagerly pursue!

Because eventually that plastic degrades into tiny bits that fish swallow,the chemicals are absorbed into the fishes tissues,& the fish ends up on someone's plate,along with a fat dose of pseudo-estrogens! For women,it means an extra risk of cancers linked to reproductive hormones,& for men,it means swollen breasts,a lower sperm count,& weight gain around the hips. Now before you make fun of the guy carrying a jute or canvas shopping bag,consider what plastic bags cost in the long run? Even if it doesn't strangle an otter,or choke a seabird!

With all due respect, @CanaryInTheTemple, taking away conveniences from Western civilization probably won’t do much (if anything) to reduce the garbage patch in the ocean—most (if not all) of that garbage came from Third World countries. Perhaps Western civ can go scoop up the garbage periodically to help our disadvantaged neighbors and prevent any plastic from breaking down & poisoning the environment! Personally, I don’t like man-boobs, but I do like sanitary shopping bags! 😊
