Although I assume you are being sarcastic, it's because of our history of not trusting government at it's word that we developed a system of oversight. Instead of taking a King at his word, we wanted checks on government. That is the opposite of government officials telling us what to do. Then, although perhaps not directly relevant to the discussion here, we all learned as small children that we rebelled against the UK because we didn't want taxation without representation.
