This is a gross misrepresentation of what she actually said.

Here is what she actually said:

“There’s scientific consensus that the lives of children are going to be very difficult,” she claimed. “And it does lead, I think, young people to have a legitimate question, you know, is it okay to still have children?”

Ocasio-Cortez’s musings on the morality of having children come at a time when the U.S. birth-rate is at a 30-year-low and below population replacement level.

She also claimed there was a “basic moral question” people had of how they can respond to climate change.

“I mean not just financially because people are graduating with 20, 30, $100,000 worth of student loan debt,” she said, “and so they can’t even afford to have kids and a house, but also just this basic moral question, like ‘what do we do?'”

There is an entire generation who is old enough to start having children, but is being constantly confronted with reasons not to. The most persuasive is the sheer financial burden that it places on an individual - in the current "gig economy", where multiple jobs for each person and multiple income households are required in order to pay bills, the idea of having a child is ludicrous.

Once one passes that immense hurdle, though, one looks at the world around and wonders if they can in good conscience bring a child into that world. Every parent-to-be has this conversation with themselves. For people who are worried about climate change, or the plunging political discourse in the US, or the stark divides that are widening between people, this conversation becomes more serious.

That's what she's saying, with an emphasis on the climate change bit. And she's not wrong, because those internal conversations are absolutely happening.

Anytime a politician begins with an appeal to authority (“there is scientific consensus”) watch your wallet.
