Here in England, manuals (stick shifts) are the default, and Automatics are mostly limited to luxury and higher-end models
I don't know anyone who drives an automatic, mostly because they tend to use more gas than manuals and manuals are almost exclusively used for driving licences anyway, so its not like its all that confusing for us
(You can get automatic-only licences but ain't no body got time for that)

That actually happened before, I heard a story about a guy who tried to rob an old lady's car but couldn't because it was a stick shift and he didn't know how to drive it.

My father insisted on my siblings and I learning how to drive in a manual, it seems daunting at the time, but in time it becomes second nature. I still drive a manual to this day.

I didn't learn a stick until I was in my 30's. And I learned it driving a Japanese fish truck so the wheel was on the right and I had to shift with my left.
