I remember waiting hours and hours for a specific song to come on the radio just so I could tape it. The kids could not understand that kind of struggle today LOL.

Hitting play record at the beginning of every song so not to miss it, and then having to rewind finding that exact place at the end of the song recorded before to place the cassette to record again lol

I used to make great covers for all of my cassettes too, hours spent at the library photocopying text and pictures (or hand drawing) and then masking them up up for the final product. I was proud of my music collection back then. Eventually they all got "print through" and had to be tossed out. Got most of 'em on CD now, the quality of remasters is mind blowing :-)

I still have drawers full of cassettes from back when I was a kid/teen. I should pull them out and listen to them and see what I was listening to back then. I don’t have the heart to ever get rid of them. And I understand what you mean about taking the time to make them perfect even with the covers.

I copied a few over to MP3 because they were local not famous bands. I still get the sound of tape because when I found the old tapes I had to go buy a tape player Walkman and play them into the computer out of the headphone jack.

I don't even have a CD player in my car now, it's got a USB port instead, very convenient :-)

I love the Boards of Canada, with all the tape hiss and old analog synths, so warm, great music too!

It’s true. The remastering on CD’s is crazy. But we went backwards in sound quality on MP3’s. Before MP3 it was all about better sound. MP3 made it all about file size.

I did that all day long in the summer. The Beach Boys were my favorite. Then I'd do the second side with my own music. lol

The good old days.
My brother used to be an absolute legend at it. He ran a "pirate" radio station using my cassette collection (600+) from his bedroom, using a transmitter he built himself :-)

Yep, but still appreciate good music, even some of the newer stuff (not mainstream crap).

What is this "splicing" that everyone is talking about and how does it work?

Video or audio tape repair. You could do it to fix a broken tape, take two smaller tapes and make one long tape, or if you are bored, cut in a section of porn to a video from Blockbuster.

You take the tape ends and use a small piece of scotch tape to bind them together. Many times you would need to open the cassette up with a screwdriver to get at the ends.

I used to have "Destroyer" on 8-track. When my mom finally gave up on throwing it away I discovered Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. The rest is history.

ah damn I was born a year before you, never spliced a tape but I remember winding tapes with my boney fingers as a kid, I can still fit my fingers in the capstan lol (but I prefer the pencil method)... and I still have a Walkman :D

I remember taping crappy cassettes like Culture Club and Cyndi Lauper and grabbing cool songs off the radio with the boom box. Had to be really fast with the pause button so I didn't get the commercials.

Using the old "piano key" recorders with an external mike and then someone would walk in just as the track was finishing and ruin the recording! When I actually got a half decent recorder with a direct lead to record with, I thought I was in heaven.
5 ups, 6y
Yup. I picked up a cheap microphone and made a pop filter out of a pair of my mom's pantyhose. Then I made a little isolation booth. It didn't work very well but it got the job done.
