For me anyway it is a way to see different viewpoints.
Try to point out the contradictions and have my contradictions pointed out.
I benefit from it so if trying to improve one's thought process is a mental disorder....sign me up. LOL

I fully understand and encourage political discussions. Political discussions are very different than having public fights over political differences. Name calling, and other attacks are very different from discussions. For me personally, I usually see no compelling reason for me to do anything other than scroll when I see opinions that are very different from mine. To me, those differing opinions, even if they are offensive to me, are guaranteed by the US Constitution. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah. I try up to a point and then realize some people are so blind to their biases they aren't worth the digital ink. You shouldn't be afraid of putting your opinion out there even in hostile territory. It might expose a weakness of your own that needs improving.
Echo chambers can't possibly do that.

Begs the question why respond to people on their level. Why not rise above it no matter what?

Among other things how do you put a bullet in "a rabid dog"'s head over the internet? Surely you've heard the phrase, don't feed the trolls.

I understand you we're being literal.

What's a troll that's another definition. Sure many people dilute it's meaning. But there are some bonafide trolls out there.

Man, if I were you I wouldn't bother to kneel down to their level. When I see an internet fight I just say that I brought popcorn.

Listen, you're acting like talking with someone over the internet is the same as dealing with a rabid dog, when it's not. You CAN reason with people, it just does not always work out in your favor because, at the end of the day, they have their individual beliefs and you have yours, and you can't change them no matter what. Think of it as trying to convince a Flat-earther that the earth is round-- sure, their beliefs are stupid and untrue, but are they really hurting anybody by being stupid? And do you REALLY think that calling them an idiot would convince them that the earth is round, IF you could convince them?

Another word for Meme is "Freedom of Expression" as granted in the US Constitution. And from my perspective, a whole lot of people seem to grow "Internet Muscles" and do or say things to those they do not agree with in ways that they would never do if they were actually in the physical presence of those same people.

I suspect that there are a good number of memers who really are not looking for a political discussion at all. They want to get their meme created stating their political view, and have that view spread throughout the interweb by those who agree with that view.

I am one of those people who simply continue to scroll when a see a political meme that is contrary to my thoughts. I'm surely actively looking for political thoughts different from mine just so that I can pick a public fight.

Memes that large numbers of people agree with will be circulated regardless of whether you or I think that they match or do not match our individual political beliefs. This is one way to get a viewpoint into the public and can often times be very different views than one hears on Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.

First off things are more nuanced than the false paradigm of Left vs. Right. Second there are fence sitters on all kinds of issues. Finally, believe it or not, many people's believes slowly change over time. It might not be perceptible to them at first. But it does happen.
