Everyone is making fun of it, but if you listen to the song (with modern sensibilities) it is kind of creepy and date rapey. It's a woman trying to politely leave, while the male makes up excuses why she can't and ignores her concerns. There's even the "hey, what's in this drink" line. I'm sure that at the time it was written it was simply meant to imply that he made her drink stronger than she asked/expected, but with modern sensibilities it seems like she might have been roofied (and back then it could have implied he slipped her a mickey).

I listened to it.... sounds completely like full-blown mutual flirtation to me. It actually sounds like she has every intention of staying, and she is going to playfully make him work for it.

Note that I indicated "modern sensibilities", women can't play hard to get anymore. Any intelligent male would immediately take her home rather than risk her claiming anything untoward happened. And any intelligent female would never try these tactics nowadays. It's a sign of the times and how sexual Dynamics have changed.

Also of note in regards to modern sensibilities, is that many of her objections do not center on whether or not she even wants to, but others perceptions of her sexual purity.

Well, IMO-- she seems to be More in control of that interaction than anyone wants to give credit. To say a female "would never try these tactics nowadays" seems to imply a loss of power, control, and choice for women today...

PTI, I don't disagree that modern nonsensibilities have changed sexual dynamics. I do think however, that women are as varied a group as any other, and while some will adhere to modern sensibilities, others will reject them and still others will be so confused that they will try to do both.

At one point in the song, she clearly says "the answer is no"
Again, in a modern context, that is considered clear and defining. Modern feminism, even softer feminism, would not allow for "well she said no, but she really meant yes."

yes. No. We must BAN THE SONG!! Patriarchal domination and rape culture must die, and the key is KILLING THIS SONG!!! <listening to demeaning profane rap music...>

The song has not been banned. A specific radio station decided to stop playing it (remove it from their playlist) after many of their listeners asked them to.
As a supplier of music, they listened to their customers and stopped providing a product that they're costomers didn't want.
As to claiming the double standard, since we don't know the complainers, we have no way of knowing what their taste in music is. Also, most profane rap music isn't masquerading as a romantic duet (context).
I'm actually surprised it took this long for it to become an issue at all. I'm fairly conservative and do think people take things too litterally, and I've been jokingly calling it "The Christmas date rape song" for several years now. If I saw that in it, I'm surprised it took this long for "screeching feminist" to make it into an issue.

"...“The world we live in is extra sensitive now, and people get easily offended, but in a world where #MeToo has finally given women the voice they deserve, the song has no place,” he wrote.

Following the decision, the radio station started a poll on its Facebook page asking whether the song should be played, with 94 percent of respondents answering yes. "

kinda surprised it took this long for that poll to come up

so a handful of screeching feminists threatened the radio station to modify their playlist to match their feminist definition of what's "OK"..... and they caved. I would hardly call that listening to their customers....

When if a woman says no, it really means yes, what way is left for her to say no? The idea that saying no, even repeatedly, especially repeatedly, is merely flirtatious and doesn't mean no, leaves women with no way they can actually say no. The social expectations this song puts forth are dangerous.

That ambiguity has been women's path to power for a long time. Going to Frwud at least "what do women want?" It is not the answer that matters, they want men to think about the question and not have an answer. By keeping men off balance with ambiguity and ambivalence, women have been able to secure a degree of autonomy.

Which they should have. No group has ever been more oppressed than women.

"It's a woman's perogative to change her mind." Ever hear that one? I think your point that sexual dynamics are changing is a good one. I also have concerns, though, about how all this play out.
