It has as much to do with the comparisons it the statistics as it does the data entry.
Also the phrasing and positioning of survey questions to lead polls in a certain direction.

Worst case scenario if we believe climate change is true. We spend a bunch of money and convert our energy sources to renewables, creating millions of new jobs, new technology and most likely, a cleaner world that is more locally controlled and nothing happens to the climate.
Worst case scenario if we don't believe climate change is real, we do nothing, continue polluting the planet and the govs own numbers come true, millions of people die, millions of people starve to death and we spend 10 times more money than we would have if we had just listened.

There's a difference between the truth of climate change and the "truth" about what we have to do about it. I don't need statistics to tell me that weather is becoming more severe and I don't to step in liberal bullshit to smell it.
