Socialism can be looked at as the ultimate form of social cooperation. Everybody contributes and everybody gains -- except no human system is perfect, people cheat, things go wrong, etc. 'Flippers and many Americans don't like the level of control involved. If the govt required that everyone married only white people and that every front door was painted green, everyone would lose their minds. With the diversity of lifestyles that we accept in the US, the idea of being locked into a restrictive socialist model is rejected out of hand, even if the system isn't necessarily restrictive. Aside from being what they are used to, capitalism has the advantage of still working even when things go wrong. In fact, perfect capitalism is something no one really wants. All IMO, of course.
