True, may not be synonymous, the Democrat party just like any other political party has gone through it changes and growing pains but I submit to you this... the southern confederates called themselves “liberals” because they felt what they were doing was liberating themselves from an oppressive and overbearing government that wanted them to give up their “property” and their political party was democrat, so I think you can see the correlation.
