It all started when people started to embrace mediocrity.

that's part of it. record companies won't sign bands that sound different because they don't want to gamble that much money so there are no new ideas, people consume music and never really try to enjoy it, theft of intellectual property by individuals and companies to the point that people feel they are entitled to your work which then makes a musician think why even try.. not that i've ever put any thought into this or anything

Take a risk, go looking for some good indie music, check out Bandcamp site.
I do love all the old stuff, esp my Prog Rock, but there's some pretty exciting new music out there, if you take the time to track it down.

i had written a very long reply but i deleted it. so i'm going to try to keep it to a couple lines. don't get me wrong, bands are still doing great new stuff. it is just weird times to be a musician. some problems are new. some are new versions of old ones.
Yep, Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame inductees as of 1992, Noel Redding (bassist) and Mitch Mitchell (drummer) but of course Hendrix died 22 years earlier at 27 in 1970.
