You're right, and that's the point! What these people fail to realize is that all this nonsensical “psycho babble” has raised generations of ADULTS unable to handle rejection or any type of loss. Wait until a serious life loss comes to them!
“Spare the rod, spoil the child” works.
“Time outs & participation trophies” do not.

If you're sadistic. Sometimes it will cause resentment towards the parent... Give natural consequences, such as if they don't put their coat on while going into the rain, they get wet, something like that.
