ALL religions can be used to promote and incite violence (except a rare few like Jainism, Quakers, Amish). Even Buddhists, as seen in (initially) Buddhist Monk lead riots and massacres against Rohingya in Myanmar.
Yet Buddhism (for the record officially a philosphy, rather than a religion, though it basically is a religion in function) preaches peace.
Islam, on the other hand, IS a religion of peace, but ONLY to those within the same sect & ethnicity. Throughout the Koran are numerous calls for slaughtering of infidels. This means not only Christians & Jews - who it has specifically named in such calls - but other Moslems sects. Thus Sunni vs Shiite, or even Sunni Arab vs Sunni Kurds. Since Kurds are a Iranic ethnicity, Arabs do not consider them true Sunni, and thus victimize them as well (most Iranians are Shiites, save some Afgan & Paki ethnicities).
ISIL does not twist anything, it focuses on and utilizes Islamic scripture that commands adherents to wage jihad upon others. Wahhabism, nationalism, a pervasive feeling of victimhood, feelings of inadequecy in terms of respect on the world stage, anger at Israel, America, Britain, and the rest of the West, etc, also add to the increase in violent factions rising and gaining influence.
Not all Muslims act that way, but the numbers continue to rise, in EVERY single country where they live (minus Myanmar). Compared to the lack of the same at the same levels from most other religious types (save Israel & Myanmar), that's alarming, not to mention dangerous and most unfortunately, deadly.
