Been watching clips and movies since I heard he passed.
I'm gonna put on Full Metal Jacket in a little while with dinner.
I've seen the entire movie The Boys in Company C. I'm sure it's online though.

Funny you chose those two, I met my version of GySgt Hartman when I was in C Company. Called us chow charging charlie, supposedly the only time we'd march properly was on the way to chow hall.

I haven't seen either in a very long time. I have to go with Full Metal Jacket though!

I'm not a Marine but when I was in Basic I had a drill sergeant who reminded me of Gunny. Only with a Mexican accent. I hope DS Santiago is well wherever he is. C/1/46, Ft. Knox, KY 1991

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: I am Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, your senior drill instructor. From now on you will speak only when spoken to, and the first and last words out of your filthy sewers will be "Sir". Do you maggots understand that?

Recruits: [In unison in a normal speaking tone] Sir, yes Sir.

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Bullshit I can't hear you. Sound off like you got a pair!

Recruits: [In unison, much louder] SIR, YES SIR!

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: If you ladies leave my island, if you survive recruit training, you will be a weapon. You will be a minister of death praying for war. But until that day you are pukes. You are the lowest form of life on Earth. You are not even human f**king beings. You are nothing but unorganized grabastic pieces of amphibian shit! Because I am hard, you will not like me. But the more you hate me, the more you will learn. I am hard but I am fair. There is no racial bigotry here. I do not look down on ni**ers, kikes, wops or greasers. Here you are all equally worthless. And my orders are to weed out all non-hackers who do not pack the gear to serve in my beloved Corps. Do you maggots understand that?

Once a Marine, always a Marine. I do not mean to slight this marine but he was only an honorary Gunny. He got his last stripe after he was out and because of his acting. He did not earn it like my father did nor did he have the Marine Corps Combat action ribbon like my Father does. They were both in VietNam at the same time. My Dad as a Grunt, Ermey as a truck driver. He served 8 years. My Father served 23.

I read that he had been medically discharged due to injury. I guess that means he was inferior and should be shunned for not being able to earn what the not medically discharged could. I'm sure had he not had an injury serious enough to get him discharged he would have been glad to stick around another 20 years and earn his stripes.

Where did you read this? CNN? Hollywood reports? After his tour in Vietnam he did serve as a D.I, and then he got out. Did he get injured as a D.I.? Unlikely...unless he was Army and his name was Sgt. Hulka .

Head over to Google and type in "Lee Ermey biography". I have read this in about 10 different places, and not just today after he died. Most of us are in here remembering our favorite Military characters he portrayed, and you are in here going on about how he didn't do something your dad did. Don't make issues where they do not exist.

His actual service is secondary to his career as a spokesman for supporting the military and what some of us still like to call "traditional American values".
That has been much more important than anything he did or didn't do, as a Marine. Every person I know who serves or served, regardless of branch, loves him.

right? I was trying not be too rude but I won't lie, it was hard. I could maybe see his point if he were being hailed in some high military regard. But that's not the even the case here! Some people. SMH....

Ermy's most important contribution was through his acting roles. He was the first to portray a drill instructor as they really are, and by doing so, shed light on what it's like to go through basic training for those who never did.

No, it's not about me. In my original comment you should have seen that I said my intention was not to slight this man. He was a Marine. They are a special breed. My point was people are holding him up as some combat tested vet hero and he was not. He was never in a firefight and he never achieved the rank of Gunnery Sergeant while in the Corps. There are many who did fight and earned their Gunny stripes under gun fire, like my Dad. They have not gotten the recognition when they died and my Father won't either because he was not in the movies. He retired as a Master Sergeant...one rank above Gunny, which Ermey got "Honorarily" and two ranks above Staff Sergeant... which Ermey actually earned while in the Corps. I suppose when Matt Damon dies everyone will mourn the loss of a great CIA agent...lol.

Your dad aint a public figure boyo. Public figures get recognition from the f**king public. We are collectively all a little safer because of your dad and the greater impact on our daily lives was probably your dads but of f**king course he aint gonna get recognized. Like hello? Your damn right people are gonna mourn matt damon .ore than your pops, because they know him duh

This thread was not "holding him up as a combat tested war here" as I already said. Therefore your comment was misplaced.

You're right! It is not a grave yard, except for all the dead memes of course! We just want to pay our respects and mourn a great loss together. Not everyone was a fan and some folks don't care. Nothing wrong with that!

This is why. Because we will remember some of his lines for the rest of our days.
