So many people have left and there are a lot of new users. I don't think anybody knows unless they get pointed out. I search a lot of stuff to photoshop and have been at this a while now so I've seen just about everything. Eventually anybody who does this for an extended period of time will notice them more and more.
Well I have a black star and a couple others switched theirs so I made that for them. I don't plan on doing anything but pointing out the reposts I see. At least then people can decide what they think with all the information.
The simple solution is to just mention it's a repost in the title and the source if they know it. The only reason not to do so is to try and take credit for another persons work.
Do you mean how I used that logo as part of the picture? I also put meme character heads on the reservoir dogs. Then I connected both pics together and tweaked their color to make them match perfectly. The matched each individual meme head to the same color. After that I put it on a background and adjusted it's color as well. I then decided to mess with some of the layering options. I beveled the edges while giving some back shadowing to make it pop off the page. After that I brought it here and thought up a caption. Made the coloring of the words match and submitted it. But yeah I can see how it looks exactly like a repost...........
Well when I apply for the licensing and trademark rights I fully intended to list it as "The BS Project " I changed the logo enough with the outer layer of the star for it to be legal. I don't think I could get the naming rights away from them cheaply though. So yeah I might have to change it before this project starts receiving donations for tax purposes.
Seriously though all smartassness aside it does raise an interesting question. If you were to chop up then photoshop 8 reposts into something new and caption it yourself would it still as a sum of it's parts be a repost. I haven't seen the real black star project meme anything with that logo but maybe they have. I suppose I should cower in shame at the possibility that one of the 8 pics I used to make that could be a repost. Making my meme in turn 1/8th repost and me a complete charliten.... as well as an incorrigible smartass leaning heavily on the ass end....
If jying would have posted this exact picture and then took credit for it, then it would be on par with those that I "picked and chose" cause that's precisely what they did...Copied and pasted. Instead he took something and added other elements to make it completely his own image. Nowhere else, not any other social media or meme site, will you find his image, but here. THAT is the big difference.
Even if I used the picture but captioned it myself that would make it a template not a repost. I've noticed that people who repost love to pick over little things like this. They know they are stealing from somebody or they would tell everybody it's a repost in the title.
Ha, this is funny. I commented on A FEW memes that were copy and paste duplicates. Literally the same exact picture, caption, font, font placement, etc... Then on those same memes, in the comments, people were congratulating the person and saying how they did an amazing job....to which the person said, " Thank you!!". therefore accepting credit for something they did not create, tweak, manipulate or TRY to make it their own! And you have a problem with me for thinking that's a shitty move? Clearly you can see there is more than just little ol me that would love for people to attempt to be creative and stop stealing. It's really not a bad thing to just NOT submit anything if you run out of ideas, ya know? I understand people want to socialize, that's why I wish they would open up other options to do so without having to be pressured to post something in order to feel you're still relevant around here. Notifications here are even hit and miss.
Support not convert lol. While I would appreciate the irony of a situation where I asked people to support originality by all choosing something I did. Even if seeing all black stars on the leaderboard and no reposts would be a pleasant change of scenery. I am so far away from being that guy lmao!
I support originality on the flip, but I'll still give young newcomers some space and credit for trying, even if it's not perfectly original. I try to encourage them to put more effort into originality. But older dudes like us have no excuse. XD
The only new users I've noticed have an account for a couple weeks then run the leaderboard and everything they make is suddenly amazing at getting upvotes. Maybe the problem is me... I have this need to find challenges and test myself so it bothers me to see people faking it. I shouldn't judge them for not thinking like I do, I simply don't see the point of fake succeeding when they know in reality they have accomplished nothing.
I'm not going to raise every spoiled brat on the internet into an intellectual creative thinking individual. As much as I like a challenge that one is impossible. I hate to say it but this site is basically meme making on training wheels. Everything I've mentioned here is required on sites that can give you 40,000 upvotes or more. They don't let reposts through the gate at all and enforce the rules they make.
I'm like you, I want to challenge myself and make good memes, or at least original ones. It's why a couple weeks ago I didn't have a submission for a whole week because I couldn't think of something original. I don't babysit every newcomer but I have found a couple lately that I like to nudge because they aren't necessarily doing the same gig over and over. They may not be perfect but they're trying, and I'm seeing improvement, so I think a few upvotes applied is a good thing, at least for me. I like imgflip for its casualness. I go to places like reddit - and yes, I know it's not memes but it's social media - and find a situation so uptight that I'd be surprised if you could get a needle up their rectums. I'm anti-authoritarian at heart and don't like being told what to do (unless you're paying me for it). I've come to respect the moderator style on here for being more hands-off. If it means some people popping on and redoing old memes - after probably not experiencing the memeing world before - I'm okay with that. If I don't think a meme is good enough then I don't upvote or comment on it. That said I'm with you on promoting originality. I do notice on the hot pages that memes using popular templates will be further up the pages than original content with more views and upvotes; I have to wonder if the mods use an algorithm that takes into account use of popular templates?
The thing about reddit is you have to figure out where to post stuff. Some subreddits are a lot harsher than others. Some won't let you post at all until you build karma so they know you are serious. I put a template on one last night and it's got 87 upvotes with only 385 views so far. Now I could put it on a different one and it might not get anything. I've always made a lot more stuff than I have on here, I gotta post it somewhere.
Ray leaving has been messing with me, there are very few left from back in the day on here. Hell most of the people I helped figure things out have left too. I put in work on my shit I just don't feel like playing the social game in order to have them do good on here.
I try posting original content as much as possible, but it's a little more difficult for me since I'm not good with photoshop. I don't even know where to start on that.
There are a few good memers who post a lot of original content like yourself. I also like SpudlyJunk's stuff.
It's not so much the repost as the accepting praise for it that makes the difference. If you knowingly repost something and somebody tells you nice work, right there is the moral implication I am talking about, an honest person will say I found it but wanted to share, a dishonest one will take credit for it and celebrate their illusion. I know which of those two people I want to interact with, everybody else can make up their own minds...
That is true. This website has taken on a lot of new users. I have seen users taking images off of Google not even trying to remake it. They just grab it and post. I'm not saying all new users are like that. But I would say a small handful has been doing that. But I think if someone gets a laugh out of it. It's okay as long as you give credit. But you know. Mized feelings. :/
I think this is more about making those that have been here long enough to know better, actually be held accountable for taking credit for someone else's work. I have no problem with reposts when the people are like, "this isn't mine, but I just had to share!" etc.... But some people on here are just making it an everyday event to copy and paste memes, then take full credit for it.
I'm all for original content, but I also realize that some people are just doing it for fun. While others have made it a serious hobby. I tire of the same caption over and over, but as far as the template that's part of the fun. All the different ways we can relate to or make fun of it.
You have a point, and people need to take into account their audience, if people didn't upvote reposts nobody would try to pretend they made them. This is one site among many, if it wants to be the repost capital of memes I'm just one person and I can continue to watch my stuff blow up other places while getting buried under reposts and people with alt accounts here. I just feel sorry for new people trying out making memes that think they aren't any good because they never got a chance. Hopefully they try other places first before giving up because I can't change an entire website based on my opinion.
I see what you're saying. But I don't think people are always pretending that they made them. I think it's the modern day passing on of jokes and sayings. We all know the reposts were thought of long ago and passed around. I will say though, it's not always about the memes here. It's often about who you know, or how many people you know, or how much cleavage you're willing to show. Because a lot of people do get their points from comments. I am one of them. Whether any of my submissions are just that horrid, or they get buried as you point out happens to you is beyond me. Perhaps you would be inspired to create your own meme site strictly for original content only. imgflip is a bit mainstream. And you know what happens when something is mainstream. Just an idea. You seem passionate about it.
That's just it, I used to think imgflip was mainstream, I used to think doing good on here meant you had a chance of going viral and being seen all over the place. Unfortunately that illusion has been shattered by reality though.
I don't need to start a meme site for just original content they already exist. In fact the biggest site on the internet where you can reach hundreds of thousands of views if not more has mods that block them instantly. And if one does get past it is downvoted into oblivion.
I've always wanted imgflip and the people on it to receive the recognition I felt they deserved. A lot of people have left though, I find myself clinging to this dream which is why I posted this meme, a desperate act of somebody wishing for the imgflip that used to be.
I know I may appear dickish for some of the things I have said. Even though my intentions are purely about wanting to raise the quality of memes up so that imgflip can at least make the top 30 of meme sites. To those who are unable to let go of the illusion I just sound like some jealous douche that is bitter his memes don't do better. When all I want is for imgflip to become the most popular meme site there is.
I can post the exact same meme in a few places. Here it will take a long time to come out usually other places they come out instantly. I have had the same meme have 80 uovotes elsewhere when it is only finally getting featured here. I have had memes do very poorly here while doing 10 times better than is even possible here as well. I've had photoshopped templates without any caption blow up and then not even get featured here because there isn't a caption on it. For me the worst one of all is that the font that is used here which I thought for years was mandatory for a meme to do well. Is made fun of by most of the internet now and considered outdated normie style memeing, so you can make a meme that does amazing on here the odds of it going any further are very slim indeed.
I love this site, I learned everything I know about memeing here and I have always felt loyal to it because of that and the friends I've made. The reality that you have to be incredibly active and kiss a lot of ass to do good here has become too obvious. I'm a nice guy who looks for the good in everything and makes friends easily My intention was never to be nice socially on here to make my memes do well. That's just my personality and it's easy to get along with other creative people.
Whew this is getting long but I gotta finish my thoughts out here lol.
The thing is a lot of my friends have left, my time is now divided between other sites and photoshop contests. As a result of which the memes I submit here have slowly dwindled down until I look like my stuff sucks based on the numbers. I might have believed I did suck if at the same time I wasn't becoming more and more popular on much larger sites at the same time. Nobody has the slightest idea who I am or what kind of person I am but if they like my meme or pic or whatever they vote for it. Which is how it should be, a vote should be based on nothing besides the content of the meme, this isn't facebook where people don't consider you a friend unless you like everything they post regardless of how they truly feel about it. It's turning into it though, I don't want that to happen.
Unfortunately all I can do is end up spending more and more time on other sites. Something that has been made easier by the amount of friends I've had get frustrated long before me and just leave. I've grown considerably at this since my first meme ever, like most relationships you either grow together or you grow apart. It's just hard to except with the memories of how good it used to be ya know?
I don't think you come off as dickish. It just seems you have a frustration you want to vent. I can think of other things in life I would feel the same about. I think when you get so many people doing this just for the relax, unwind and have a laugh aspect you get a different result. But for the reasons and goals you mention I fully expect something different. And you never know. You putting all this out there may inspire more people to think more outside the box and get more creative. I see where you're coming from though.
All that aside, I wish I could do better with making better templates. Between not having a ton of time to devote, and not really knowing how to use the editing software I have now mine still suck. I get stuck using Microsoft Paint which as you likely know can only do so much. I have recently obtained paint.net which seems like it would be good but I haven't had the time to really sit down and figure it out. So, while you're at it in here maybe you have some good pointers to share?
Toolpic.com is what I used until I got this new laptop that has a pixel editot on it that is exactly the same. The freedistort option in the edit tab is vital in my opinion and a lot of sites and or programs don't have it. You can grab any of the 4 corners of your layer which is the pic you put on your background and stretch them which helps immensely when trying to get things to line up realistically. The options for working with layers are also very nice. You can choose which one goes on top of which and even merge them together and move them as one. Like say I wanted to put a guitar in somebody's hands and also add them to a pic. I'd add the person and the guitar to the pic, make it where the guitar overlayed the person, then after getting the guitar to line up right and erasing part of it so that their hand is holding it I can merge them both together as one layer. That way I can now more or distort them both together so they fit the background pic better.
I'm always willing to give people pointers I don't mind at all. If you have any questions just ask anytime :)
I don't think I would do any of this if I didn't love it. I am very ADHD and my mind races a lot which makes it very difficult to relax. When I am creating something though I am able to focus on it and everything else slips away for a while. So just one person laughing at something I made is enough for me. Anything that puts positive energy out into the universe like that is a worthwhile pursuit in my opinion
I tend toward panic and anxiety. My mind doesn't always settle down unless I have something to put some weight on it. I have a lot of things I like to do, and sometimes do some some wacked out projects because I do need to zone out and "get right" sometimes. So we may be similar in that respect. Thanks for the the tip about the freedistort option. I would have went who knows how long before knowing I needed it. I'll holler next time I decide to sit down and try to make some sense of it. Thanks again! This old lady is going to bed. now. LOL!
Okay. So I went to Toolpic first. LOL... just wanted to take a look at it. It looks nice. I'm going to test it out tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion!
