There is nothing wrong with being realists. I am a realist a lot of the time. But if you're not careful that can become an excuse for giving up and not trying. The point of the meme was never about chess itself. It was about life goals. I Googled "against all odds" and this picture came up. And I thought it fit the quote pretty well. The template is just for symbolism. No matter how many odds are against you, no matter what objectives are in your way, you can still be the best you can be, you can still succeed.
I am currently trying to accomplish something that a lot of people think I shouldn't even try to do. But it is something I really feel like I need to do. So failure isn't an option, even if there are some odds against me.
I want to join the army but it hasn't worked out yet. ASVAB score wasn't the best and I am not in as good of shape as I was when I graduated. Both can be improved on though.
Family and friends don't want me to join.
After submitting it I thought there might be someone who made something racist out of it. Nothing would surprise me about that. Some people would think there is something racist hidden behind a kitten stuck up in a tree. Oh well. XD
Since there is no white king, the black pieces can't achieve checkmate so white can't lose. If the single white pawn was captured, that would be a stalemate. So applying "realism" actually makes this more true.
Since when did the picture imply that there was no white king? Just because he is out of view doesn't mean we can assume that he isn't there. And since the meme implies that a game is being played we can assume he is there. You can't start a chess game without the king in any variant or handicap. No realism can ever be applied here.
