It really is! First she learned sign language by feeling her teacher's hands, and eventually she learned to actually speak in multiple languages (she would feel the vibrations of her voice, and receive feedback from her instructor as to whether she was doing it right or not). It's a very fascinating story, and worth looking up sometime!

My undergrad major was languages and linguistics and I spent a year in a PhD program studying linguistics--interesting question!

This question made me wonder... why isn't there a comedy movie about a person who went deaf 20-50 years ago, who then regains their hearing and is completely unable to communicate since English had changed so much over that time?
