Actually, atheists state that they choose not to believe in a being so monstrous as a source of moral attitude. We've already got a bunch of monsters in Congress right now, so why do we need a monster in the sky telling us what to do?

Look up the cult of Molech and the Ammonite civilization. There is archaeological and other historical evidence of their existence and the practice of making their children "pass through the fire."

The biblical answer to "why did God have entire civilizations, including women and children, wiped out" is since he gives life he can take it away as he sees fit. He saw fit to get rid of every trace of that people group. I don't know why other believers want to obfuscate the truth, God did not want that nation of people mixing with the nation of Israel, so he used the judgement of their national sins to achieve to things: justice and keeping the nation of Israel undefiled.

This God seems to give life to those who follow him while taking away the lives of people who don't believe in him. I wouldn't call that leadership. I'd call that Islam.

God gives life to every living thing and he "causes it to rain on the just and the unjust." He controls how long any of us lives and he gives certain blessings to his enemies.
The fact that you can not refute is that no where are followers of Jesus Christ commanded to harm or murder or kill anyone for any reason. Whereas the followers of Mohammed are commanded to terrorize, murder, and subjugate unbelievers and those followers are promised entrance into paradise for themselves and their entire immediate family upon death if they die in jihad.

Apart from the despicable acts of bringing Christ into the Constitution, the Congress, etc., and trying to ban gay marriage. Then the people who perform that sort of thing have sources, like Saudi Arabia's government.
