You'll notice, for example, that most office clerks are female. Up until WWI, office workers were mainly men. It was discovered about then that women would do the same work for less, so now the number of men in an office setting is lower. Since WWII, women have moved into the factories, many replacing men because they could be paid less.

Well,a lot of Airline companies hire more women than men because,statistically,women are lighter than men,and flights are easier and spend less fuel with them.But that's only what I've heard,so don't take it too seriouisly

Good point. My understanding is it is literally as flawed as comparing the total aggregate pay of each. No adjustment for maternity leaves etc., nothing really more sophisticated than that. Ergo erroneous conclusion :-/

The supposed pay gap is because more women than men work in lower paying jobs. Not because they get paid less than men for the same job.
