Because Christianity teaches to treat others how you want to be treated... and that only God can pass judgement... zI think they were afraid their cake was going to end up in some unholy orifices...

Yeah - if you don't want to make something for someone just say you're busy. So basically they violated so many of the teachings of Jesus that it seems pointless as to why they have any faith at all. In most cases like this it just seems their belief is a support for their conservative beliefs, not the other way around.

Yeah, suddenly there's a big 'religious freedom' drive in the US after years of conservative attacks on religions other than Christianity. Another shield against receiving what they're only too happy to dish to others.

Oddly enough they had bought cakes from the bakery before and the bakers had apparently known of their homosexuality. It was a bad time for the bakers to get 'moral'. I'm in full agreement with you.

Then you cant force your ideology on them

EXACTLY! That sounds like something NightRick would do.

I wouldn't dream of forcing my ideology on anyone - unfortunately, that is not a two way street.

Well, the civil rights issue isn't about not being able to buy a cake wherever one wants, but rather the wider implications of a system that allows discrimination against homosexuals in services and employment. additionally, how is refusing to do your job for someone based entirely on the belief that homosexuality is immoral not homophobic?

I'm not sure what your point is, but yeah that's kinda stupid, assuming it's true.

Mother and father roles are still present, it can reduce single motherhood, it can help fix declining birthrates, and then there's conjoined twins, what are they supposed to do for marriage?

The point is that in this situation, the discrimination that can happen to gay couples is nothing compared to what can happen to polygamists

Well, there's no real reason why gay marriage should be illegal in the first place, especially considering the fact that marriage isn't for the sole reason of procreation. As for polygamy, the only argument against it is that in every country where it is applied in its full, it's a complete and utter legal mess. Not that such is a good reason to deny polygamy legal status; after all, if it's messy then that's on the married, it's not the state's responsibility. As for the fact that polygamists face more discrimination in certain circumstances, I don't see how that's relevant to my original point in the least.

My point is that the problem with gay couples being denied a wedding cake can be fixed simply by going to another bakery that is willing to make one, (Something that many people agree with judging by how many views and upvotes this meme has gotten) rather than having the state force a business to do something they don't believe in.

On the other hand, trying to find a bakery willing to make a polygamist wedding cake, let alone one that won't call the police - very difficult.

Such is a worthwhile topic of issue in and of itself, but still not relevant to my original point.

I'm not saying that they're not homophobic, but the fact that gay couples refuse to solve their problem by the simple solution of going to another bakery makes it seem like a homophobia witch hunt (like that one case of a man who purportedly received a cake with a homophobic slur on it, that turned out to be made by him)
1 up, 7y
Yes, of course they solve their problem by going to another bakery; the fact that they complain about having been discriminated against should not imply otherwise.

Also, I would appreciate it if you would cite a source, since I've been supporting the polygamist community for a while now, and this issue has never come up.

Look up Mark Henkel's videos on YouTube. He goes well in depth on polygamy; the legal risks they face (to even mention yourself as being a polygamist can potentially warrant a police investigation)

Thank you for the sources; I'll look into it as soon as I get a chance.

Interesting point. By polygamy, I assume you mean one man with multiple wives. I have a better suggestion based on some of my reading: Group marriages. A family may have a marriage that consists of, say, multiple husbands and multiple wives in the same family unit. All members wouldn't even need to be heterosexual.

It might sound crazy, but the theory is discussed in several of Robert Heinlein's books: Stranger In A Strange Land approaches it carefully, The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress goes into more depth, and, while not part of the original Methuselah's Children story arc, by the time he gets to Time Enough For Love, it is commonplace. He also discusses it in Friday, including the removal of a spouse from the family unit.

It makes more sense than one man with a dozen wives. While that may give a man some variety, his spouses are not much more than chattel. Income is put to the common good of the family, household needs are split among the group, kids never have to deal with being an only child. Cheating on a spouse? If you find someone interesting, discuss it with partners to see if they are interested in a new wife/husband to the team.

As for businesses that refuse to provide services to a legal wedding, I put forth a comment made to me when I was doing Stand Up. I was booked into a traditionally black night club. They didn't worry about your skin color, though. If you walked through the door and had the cash to buy a drink, you were served. Why? Because in business, the important thing is not the color of your skin, but the color of your money.

Indeed. I don't think it would make any sense to legalize a man having multiple wives but not other forms of group marriage.

Things got interesting when the same thing happened in the US with a Muslim salon rather than a Christian bakery; let the leftist Oppression Olympics commence!

Seriously, I suspect those gay people were just trying to make trouble for Christians.
