As KenJ points out, everybody was treated like crap. And being a Christian did not necessarily mean you would be thrown to the lions. In eras when Christians were persecuted, punishment could be anything from banishment, flogging, taxation through sacrifices to the Roman deities, working in the salt mines, beheading, imprisonment, and, yes, being thrown to the wild beasts: there are other animals that were used, such as dogs, other large cats, and once, even an enraged heifer.
The key to this, though, was that it wasn't just Christians that were persecuted. Just like Jesus hung on the cross between two thieves, the above punishments were also placed upon other law breakers. Punishment was harsh for any that broke a law. A purse snatcher, a rapist, a pick pocket or a murderer could be part of any mass punishment.
