SOME IDEALS SHOULDN'T HAVE MONUMENTS FOR WHAT THEY REPRESENT | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
There aren't any statues that glorifies Christian being persecuted in Rome. But the Vatican is built over pagan temple.

As KenJ points out, everybody was treated like crap. And being a Christian did not necessarily mean you would be thrown to the lions. In eras when Christians were persecuted, punishment could be anything from banishment, flogging, taxation through sacrifices to the Roman deities, working in the salt mines, beheading, imprisonment, and, yes, being thrown to the wild beasts: there are other animals that were used, such as dogs, other large cats, and once, even an enraged heifer.

The key to this, though, was that it wasn't just Christians that were persecuted. Just like Jesus hung on the cross between two thieves, the above punishments were also placed upon other law breakers. Punishment was harsh for any that broke a law. A purse snatcher, a rapist, a pick pocket or a murderer could be part of any mass punishment.

Of course it wasn't just whites that owned slaves. Just like there were confederates who owned an abused black slaves there were some black slave owners who were also abusive to other blacks.

You know it's really rude to keep telling the truth like that.

Never said anything about the civil war era. I spoke only of early Christianity. How do you find these comparable?

The meme refers to confederate statues that are being removed because they are "offensive" to blacks. Just pointing out that, like being a Christian did not necessarily mean you were thrown to the lions, being black did not necessarily mean you were a slave to confederates.

Again, it doesn't say anything about being offensive to blacks, it only says offensive. It devastated families as young men on both sides of the conflict went off to battle and many of them never returning. And for what? To help a few rich people get richer. But it's not just a black thing.

The civil war was fought over slavery . . . black slavery. People find the statues offensive because they are "relics of white supremacy".

"Debate over the future of Confederate memorials and symbols has become particularly intense across the South after the June 2015 massacre of nine black worshipers in a Charleston, S.C., church by a young white supremacist."

You can pretend it isn't a black thing but reality doesn't support your argument.

The civil war was started over the rights of the southern states to succeed from the federal union. Lincoln didn't sign the emancipation proclamation till years after the war started to start a home grown rebellion and kaos in the south while the men were off fighting. Lincoln wanted to preserve the union and found the blacks useful for that. Otherwise he didn't give a shit about them.

The Civil War started because of differences between the free and slave states over the power of the government to prohibit slavery in the territories that had not yet become states. Lincoln wanted to keep slavery out of the territories. That's why the slave states wanted to secede from the union in the first place, so the government couldn't make slavery illegal in those states too.

Like I sad, the civil war was all about slavery. The war started in April 1861. The emancipation proclamation was first issued in September of 1862 and signed by Lincoln on January 1, 1863 -- less than two years after the war started. The war ended in the spring of 1865 -- more than two years after Lincoln signed the proclamation.

I see why you want to erase history, so you can replace it with your own twisted version.

Who benefited from slavery being legal? The share cropper in Mississippi? the backwoodsmen in the hills of Kentucky that could barely keep their family fed?

Think about the recent past: our current president ran on a promise to stop the flow of illegal aliens from taking jobs from Americans. How did they take those jobs? By being able to work for slave wages, enduring unsafe, backbreaking, working conditions. Do you believe that the working class, mostly farmers, of antebellum America didn't have their problems with aliens taking their jobs. The only thing was, those aliens didn't come here of their own free will.

No, the civil war was fought so the rich could get richer and the poor stayed poor. It's all about money, even today.

The eagle is the most enduring symbol of fascism and imperialism in history. Ben Franklin wanted to use the turkey instead. Is it time for a change?

Ben Franklin suggested the turkey out of sarcasm.

Everybody treated everybody like sh!t back in the Roman days; praising those who promoted racist government in the near past in a part of the country that will be majority black shortly is like rubbing it in. And, after all, it IS southerners who are making the decision to have the monuments removed.

I don't think we can build prisons fast enough to support a majority black population in the US

Nor can we build schools fast enough to educate the ignorant, apparently.

And "you" dictionary, please, with your corrections. The colosseum was opened in 80AD you fool and the activities including releasing starving lions on Christians and other undesirable peoples of that period is well documented. Meanwhile blacks were the largest slave holders of other blacks worldwide in the 19th century. But nobodys supposed to know that dirty little secret.
