Well, the fact that this picture is photo shopped and also the fact that the signs could be showing the direction in which you need to travel to get to the highways that go north, east, etc.
I know, I ruined the fun. Still upvoted, though.

It may have been photoshopped some, but it is there in Nyach NY. You have to go south to go east and I lived to the north and went west. Not so bad and caused me not to go over the Tappinzee bridge which was a bonus.

I may have been wrong about the whole photo shop comment. I realized that this was interstate 287 and not highway 287. Interstate 287 is in the New York area and highway 287 goes from Texas to Wyoming. I live about an hour away from highway 287 in Texas.
Ahhhh the NJ logic of the JUGHANDLE. Keeping traffic moving....yet confusing as hell for some

Reminds me of the east la interchange in Los Angeles, where four freeways interchange (101/60/5/10). I-10 east becomes 5 north for a couple miles . Very complex interchange.
Not saying that the system is great, but it does have its own logic. 87 is a north/south highway, but it's bypassing something here, so the bypass is named 287. the branch that bypasses to the west is west 287 and the east is east 287, even though their ultimately still travelling north/south.

All I know, whoever is naming the roads and designing them has got to be on pot.
