It's just a meme dude...and the Jesus cloud was more than likely photoshopped...you'd have to be an idiot to base ideology on anything but FACT.

That a Man called Jesus existed around 2000 years ago and attracted great crowds is a historically proven fact. I guess the issue that people like to discuss centres around the question "Is He who He said He was?" I.E - The Son of God who receievd the punishment for our sin. Now that's a question worth debating.

when you say "fact" and "proven"....in what sense are you using those words?

Just that, that there is emperical evidence of His existence. He is a historical figure that has been well documented. Not just from the Bible, or not just from Jesus' followers either but from non believers too. The writings of the 1st-century Romano-Jewish historian Flavius Josephus (a non-believer) include references to Jesus and the origins of Christianity. Josephus' Antiquities of the Jews, written around 93–94 AD includes two references to the biblical Jesus Christ in Books 18 and 20.

I have read Antiquities, many many years ago. i started reading Holy blood and the holy grail and followed up as many of the references i could possibly find. this was in the days before the internet and i spent many a weekend trolling round antique bookshops (and spent a fair bit of money in the process!) I found one good modern translation of antiquities and one from the 30's/40's. Trust me, there is no mention of Jesus Christ in this work.

If my memory serves me right, there is a character who appears some 100-150 years prior to the time given for Jesus' birth (his name escapes me) and it is this figure that a lot of modern historians believe the figure of Jesus was based on, but this was a man, and in no was he ever called the son of god. He featured heavily in a revolt against the Romans and was (possibly?) hailed as a messiah at that time. what became of him i can't remember.

Admittedly Josephus' works are open to interpretation and some interpretations/commentaries are written by Christians, it's in these interpretations that Jesus appears. This is far from empirical truth and barely constitutes anecdotal evidence. What you'll find from some interpretations is that they either do not take into account mistranslations, or use mistranslations to support their argument.

The references of the historical and Biblical Jesus in Josephus' Antiquities of the Jews are so well documented that anyone doing the smallest amount of research will discover this to be true (yes, there is refernce made to the Maccabeen revolt too). What is debated by people is whether the texts are authentic. I.e.was there a Christian conspiracy to have select texts of their own material inserted into the original work? Once again, this conspiracy theory has been vigerously researched and shown to be false. Of course such evidence will not be accepted by those not wanting to, which is where the emperical versus anecdotal debate comes in to play. Not sure why you have reached the conclusions you have but I do respect them. I just don't agree with them and have reached a different conclusion.

Thanks for that, hadn't heard/seen anything about it. I've got some friends who really get into that sort of stuff (biblical/archaeological discoveries). My interest is more around understanding the teachings of Jesus and trying to adopt them into my daily life. I've found that this is enough of a challenge for me :) His teachings certainly raised the bar to a level that is beyond the grasp of us all to attain - without His Spitit to help us that is. I'm still making mistakes, but I'm definately learning and hopefully getting a bit wiser as I go. And His promise was to give us grace for those times we blow it, as long as we keep focussing on Him and believing. Sorry for waffling on. Thanks again :)

well done gentleman (or ladies) this is the most civil of debates I have ever witnessed on an online forum. I am new to this site and this is the second time today I have been blown away (positively) by people in this community!

you can't expect to agree with everyone so it's nice to have a bit of civil debate where maybe both parties can learn something new :-) but they're not always like this, trust me! i have a troll on my case right now (i can't even remember how it started!!) but that gets pretty nasty and childish at times. i try to keep things on an intellectual level but i'm not averse to lowering my standards to meet the trolls' if need be...sometimes you got to fight fire with fire :-p

anyhoos welcome to imgflip, i've been here about 6 weeks now...or is it 6 years...it's hard to tell and i'm sure it won't take long for you to understand what i mean by that :-p

Welcome aboard my friend and 'thanks' for the positive feedback. Yeah, there's no reason why things can't be civil. I think it's cool when we can share our beliefs and explain why we believe them. Nothing good ever comes from resorting to name calling - i just don't get that. I hope that you really enjoy your time here. I've met some really interesting people here that I'd never have met otherwise ;-)
