The Way I feel when someone shoots my meme down. Believe it it not, we all started out at 0 points.

There are a few on here who hate all the "popular" users on here. I just ignore them. They're the users who think everyone should be the same and think they should get something for nothing.

Yup...I ignore them too...You know, I can't deny that our popularity gives us advantages over the average user, but the one thing these people don't seem to understand, is that we "EARNED" that popularity, whether it be by making funny comments, memes, being helpful, etc. etc. For whatever reason, other users started liking us and therefore, started looking for us and upvoting us. I've long been saying that I don't consider myself the best memer on this site...arguably the most popular maybe still, but not the best...I just throw my memes out there like everyone else...I can't control who upvotes them or why.

The one thing I can control is how I behave on the site and the choices I make on what to say to people...and for the most part, I think that is one of the biggest reasons I'm popular...at least I've been told that quite a few times.

And let's not forget that there are newer users like DashHopes and Lynch1979 who are doing very well on this site and they don't complain about anyone.

I'm just kidding, lol. I have noticed that it's getting harder and harder to get on the leaderboard tho. When I joined you needed like 120k-ish points for the bottom spot. Now it's like 220k ._.
If I hadn't of taken that break in April I might've made it to the top 10; As it is, I'll have to settle for the low 20's xD

Yes, you're one of the newer user's who have done very well here. When I finally got onto the leader board I only needed 76,000 points. And there weren't as many "fast paced" users here, either. I was on the 7-day leader board for a few months without leaving it and only needed to average about 20-25k a week.

And yeah, I think as time goes on it will be harder for new users to get a foot in the game (Is that even a legit expression?). Ironically enough, I felt like imgflip was one of the few sites that was actually fair to new users. Most sites, users have little to no chance of ever even getting recognized. Like, at all.

Exactly...just two examples of how easy it can be to rise to the top...put in the time, make the comments...the FUNNY comments and people WILL notice...but if you fall into the rut of being negative in your comments, people will also notice THAT...and we all know where that leads...I know I never once complained about the popular users when I was a newbie...as soon as Tet told me about making comments to get popular...it was game on!!! I wish I still had that kind of time...to comment as much as I use to, but now that winter is over, it's time to take my ass OUTSIDE!!!

I never really care if my memes or comments are popular or upvoted sometimes I like to post my ideas for something humorous and see what some people think of it, even if it doesn't get a lot of likes from it, at least it could probably inspire more people to make even funnier memes and even funnier comments. but hey at least I given my idea

Not picking sides here, but usually the people who "hate popular people" are doing so not only because they're communist, but also because they were affected by something in real life that makes them hate popular people in general.

The "popular users" on this site are only popular on the site. That's what I'm talking about. And it's not just popularity, it's about work hard to get to a goal you set for yourself. If that goal is being in the top 100 here or in the top 10, then you do what I did and work at it and not complain. Not saying you're complaining, but just an example.

I "worked" hard since around September of last year to garner points because I wanted to be in the top 10 in points. Why? Because I'm a competitive person and just felt like it. Now I'm currently #7. And I never complain.

The line "it only got upvoted because you're popular" annoys me too. It's just such a dumb thing to say. People don't normally upvote a meme they dislike just because of who the user is.

I think everyone does that as well.

I wonder what would happen on imgflip if just for a certain time period, people made a discipline of only upvoting memes that they thought were really good-quality front-page-worthy memes, regardless of who the user was.

You're talking about seeing a so-so meme, and giving the person an upvote anyway, either because of their other memes you like, or because you like them as a person, or any other reason you choose. But it's still your choice to do it.

I'm talking about how when people say that users "only" get upvotes due to popularity, as if other factors don't affect it. It's almost as if people believe that people upvoting would suspend their own choices and upvote certain popular users even if they actually disliked the meme, which isn't realistic.

Well, it's nice of you to say that, but that's not always true. People can have lots of different reasons for upvoting memes (e.g. funny, relatable, certain political view). The user's popularity probably comes into it, too.

I was trying to say that it's silly to say that people "only" upvote a meme because the user is popular. People aren't going to say "well, I like this user so I'll just upvote no matter what." If a popular user keeps posting memes that nobody can understand, or are really offensive (like being racist or sexist without being joking about it, for example), their memes aren't going to get upvoted, and they're not likely to stay popular. Hopefully that makes sense.

I'll upvote certain user's memes if they're about to reach a milestone on the site, like a million points or 500,000 points. But as much as I like your memes, i haven't upvoted ALL of them. Just being honest. I'd say about 95% of your memes I've upvoted.

would be an interesting social experiment to see if people actually do that. have two different accounts, one a well-known, and the other not, post identical memes at the same time. See what account gets more upvotes/comments. I have done something like this before myself.

The more popular one would probably get more views, then more upvotes and comments because of this. But if they were perfectly identical then people would assume the lesser known account's was a copy.

pureserenity, it's already well-known that some users get more views and upvotes, because they consistently hit the front page. I agree that at times "populars" get a quick upvote, here and there, but for the most part? They're funny as shit. Consistently.

I don't complain when some of my funny memes don't blow up and hit the front page; I just keep making memes. And making comments on others' memes. That is literally how you succeed here. It's very simple.

I'm not complaining either, I just hope to make people laugh and join in the fun. Thanks for your replies though! I do enjoy the positive feedback.

I'll admit, I upvote users that I like, even if the meme isn't that great. I always hook a brother up.

It drives me crazy. I upvote memes for many reasons, the only time I upvote for the heck if it is during an upvote party. I enjoy looking at other's memes. It cracks me up how similar a lot if our minds work. The fact that I have gained popularity on the site doesn't guarantee me front page spots though. :-)

It does get annoying seeing negative feedback towards popular users and false accusations against us as a group, not just on our own memes, but basically anywhere.

Popular users have a lot of the same struggles that all users have, and people don't realize it, because they mostly only see our "hot" memes - they don't see the failed ones.

But just like all users, our memes have to "run the imgflip gauntlet" too:

first, waiting to see if it will get featured, then hoping it won't get downvoted back to submission, then seeing if it gets popular or fizzles, and then of course all the checks it has to go through by people who look at every aspect of the meme (grammar, wrong template) etc and point out all possible exceptions to the scenario! :)

I think the big benefit users get from being popular is that our memes get more views than other users generally get, right from the start (I don't know whether that's from "followers" who search out our profiles, or because our names are visible on the weekly scoreboard with clickable links, or some combination of both). But those views give us a big advantage. If we make even a half-decent meme, we're almost certain to get at least some upvotes, whereas an unknown user can make a better quality meme, but if it comes out at the wrong time, it can go completely unnoticed in the Latest Stream (which really sucks to see).

But on the other hand, the downside of being popular is that people just lump us in together and if there's anything people don't like about the site, or about how their memes aren't getting as many upvotes as they want, it's suddenly our fault (as if we're the ones who influence all the votes and views). And they're allowed to badmouth us all they want, but we don't have the same freedom for how we answer them back.

It'll be good when he's back being more active on the site, and his memes are making the front page regularly again.

Even if they get shitty memes upvoted because they're popular, doesn't mean they got popular that way.

to me who cares if they are popular, I just upvote any memes that are really funny, make sense and are original.
