Sometimes non answerable questions are inserted as a control to see if there is cheating going on. They don't count in you grade but they're there as a control to see if a collaboration has occurred. For example if there are four non answerable questions and a disproportionate number of test takers all choose the same answer, this is a statistical anomaly and indicates collaborative cheating.

So that means you're saying the answer is 650 regular-sized tacos?
I've heard this before, too. (No sources to quote, sorry - just word of mouth from a person who used to proctor tests.) But I always tell my children that they are to prepare you for the real-working world...
I think maybe the term i used ... "non answerable"... was inaccurate. The type of questions I encountered were designed so that every possible choice was a correct answer... or none were a correct answer so that you either had to guess the answer. Since the answers were guesses, if several individuals came up with the same "guesses" it would indicate collaboration... which is cheating.
Very clever! Sad to think we live in a world where that is necessary - but well - we do! Seems as though some smart folks have figured out how to cut the cheaters off. Very clever.
Do you have any resources supporting this? I'm not asking because i disagree with you or drought you i just would like a site or article to show people because I have heard this before but nobody believes me when i say what you just did....So any resources would be appreciated.
I've taken tests where there were control questions like I described. After the test I asked about three very odd questions that I thought were mis-worded and was told they were control questions as I described. It made sense considering the testing conditions were such that cheating would have been possible.

One time during an "open book" test we were given a book which had answers in it and a lot of meaningless material and a paper with questions on it and it also told us which pages in the book the answers were on. On some pages were just pictures of Greek Gods doing a face palm and a caption, "Why are you on this page? You weren't instructed to be here!"
But but! Theres no need to show work! Because all dragonflys eat burritos for breakfast and cause ~ and €¥£¢{¢°€={¢^?`=° and a bunch of #+#-#+*-#&-_???????????????????????????????????? and a little ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? so therfore 666
The teacher doesn't care. Also, that may be showing your work, but the teacher did a 300 page graphic novel about how aliens don't wear hats to show her work. Since you did not show your work in the way the teacher did, you get an F.
Remember, it's standardized testing. It's the time where there is no extra credit and you get detention for leaving 'Wesley was Here' on your computer.
