The actual reason was because they wanted it to be as far from Windows 8 as possible, last I checked.

Maybe it's binary and it's really called Windows two... Then maybe the number, "two" is a play on words and is meant to be "too" as in, "don't forget about Windows, too"

because the string "Windows 9" is included in the string "Windows 95". Programmers screwed over be marketing once again.
