Funny I just got done with church
There's so much stuff in the Bible that people will say isn't real, but then you find out they're in other historical documents too
Like Gameliel the pharisee
You read that he let the apostles go after they escaped from jail, you go "that isn't real" but then you look elsewhere to find out... Gameliel was such an influential Pharisee that people called him Rabbeth (our teacher) instead of Rabbi (my teacher)
The more you study the bible, you learn that people who reject the Bible aren't just clueless. They're willfully stupid 🙂

Really the Bible is in and of itself not just one but many historical documents.
It compiles four separate historical witness accounts of the earthly life of Jesus Christ. Four different historical witness accounts documenting the same thing in any other situation would be treated as irrefutable but people really just don't wanna believe in the Bible.

atheists know jesus is a real historical figure and was someone morally ahead of his time, we just don't believe he was a messiah/a god's reincarnation

A normal guy morally ahead of his time who just happened to have extreme catastrophes in response to his death and just happened to come back two days later...

We also don't believe in the ressurrection, but we do acknowledge his morality
1 up, 4d
The resurrection of Christ is well documented in the same historical documents as his life, acknowledging one acknowledges the other.

What does that mean

if you dont know, you dont need to know.

It's probably related the the Jewish law forbbiding "the waste of seed".

Welp it's clearly a sin to have sex with your sister or something

Actually, depending on if she's a widow, you were commanded to... I'm personally a fan of cherry picking doctrine and saying this was just an extra thing and the spirit of the law is to give people money.

Well then you aren't taking this seriously then 😂 nobody is out here marrying their sister

Well... Uh... It was actually really popular among Christians and there's still actually a lot of CSA incest in Christian housholds.

Well those guys suck and need to take the Word Of God seriously
0 ups, 3d
they probably do take it seriously, but they have a misinterpretation of the Bible. many people throughout history always misinterpreted Scripture, they don't study the context of the scripture they are reading and then interpret it the way they want it to be disregarding its actual meaning.
0 ups, 4d
what does this have to do with the word of god?

The bible tells us not to have sexual relations with close relatives

it was one of the commandments God gave Noah after He flooded the earth (what you said)

No actually you were to marry your brothers widow and your first child was named after your brother to keep his name going.

Yes. That would be your sister-in-law.

Yes, the key part is "in law" which means you aren't related by DNA at all.

So Step siblings are okay?
0 ups, 4h
That's not step. That's in law.
0 ups, <1h
So... Is it ok or not?
0 ups, 4d,

lemme tell you:

Judah has this son, Er, who has a wife. Er dies because he was struck down by the Lord for being wicked. Now, in Jewish, law, the next younger sibling has to perform his now dead brother's duty to have children with his wife. Onan, Er's younger brother, is assigned to f**k Er's wife. He refuses, "spilling his seed on the ground." For that. God struck Onan down too.

The end.

It was a great shame and disrespect to not take your late brother's wife as your wife, in Jewish culture

I can 100% guarantee you're misinterpreting it so unless you can cite the specific passage so somebody can tell you what it actually says you're not to be taken seriously.
0 ups, 4d,

No. It's deadass a story. A man in commanded to marry his widowed sister and then commanded to impregnate her and then when he pulls out, he's punished. It's not a niche story. You should've read it yourself if you're an actual Christian.
0 ups, 4d,

I didn't say I haven't read it, I'm just making sure you've actually read it by asking you to cite the passage.

The Bible is a set of historical documents, not everything that happens in the Bible, much like with the rest of history, is applicable to us in the modern day. As Flick7 describes in other replies, it was a Jewish cultural thing of the era. What God has asked us to do has changed, even within the timespans described in the Bible.
Saying "it's a sin" is a misinterpretation of the passage. It WAS wrong according to this one story that was written not necessarily as a message to us in the modern day.
0 ups, 4d,
1 reply
Yeah. Like I said. It's Jewish law. I know. It's the same thing with the gay passages.
0 ups, 3d,
1 reply
The gay passages were because they spread disease. Anyone outside of marriage would spread diseases. The only way back then to prevent it was to only have intercourse with one person your whole life.
0 ups, 3d,
1 reply
That's not super true especially because people had multiple wives. Jewish law is just that no sex can exist outside of purposeful procreation. But anal specifically is really dangerous with condoms or prep so I see where they were going with that.

And lesbians are not forbidden by Jewish law or actually in the bible.
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
No, Jewish law was one wife because if you had sex with another woman while married you were guilty of cheating. Pretty sure the part about women laying with woman as if they were men being an abomanation to God covers that.
0 ups, 23h
No it's only the opposite. Men lying with men as a woman. And Polygamy is biblical so both debunked.
0 ups, 4d,
1 reply
Maybe. There's no way to know for sure what's just anecdotal and what's a sin.
0 ups, 3d,
1 reply
There is. Other parts of the Bible make things more clear, as well as messages from more recent individuals called of God.
0 ups, 3d,
1 reply
Then why is it still debated by scholars who are smarter than you?
0 ups, 2d,
3 replies
You're not a scholar, and what you said has nothing to do with scholars. A sin is an action that goes against God. What is a sin and what isn't depends on what God has asked a given people to do at a given time. If you knew anything about Bible scholars and what they talk about, you would know the Bible has documents from a massive range of time and a large range of peoples, each with different cultures and needs.

Only some of the commandments persist into our peoples and cultures and needs. The Ten Commandments, for example, do. But the Law of Moses, for example, was fulfilled by Jesus in the New Testament, and as such is not something we are still asked to live.
0 ups, 2d,
1 reply
No. a sin would what God determines to be a sin. And unless you can read God's mind, you're not gonna know what that is.
0 ups, 2d
So that first statement is what I said but with a less descriptive wording.

And as for that second statement? God isn't mute.
0 ups, 2d,
1 reply
Not technically mute. But everyone hears him say things differently. Language is fallible. There is no perfect communication method that exists as anyone knows it.

Full disclosure, God talks directly to me. And I'm mature enough to still have skepticism. Because Belief without skeptism kills people. I'm a human first and a child of God second. I don't listen to things that can harm me or others. (Which he never says but still)
0 ups, 20h
Language is fallible but God is above that. He speaks to each one of us individually, and in a way we each understand individually.
I'm a Child of God first and a human second.
And if you agree that God speaks to His children then you inherently also agree that there is a way to know what sin is, no?
0 ups, 18h
God deadass told me in a real voice that there's no actual way to know what sin is. There's not even a secular moral consensus. He told me that my job on earth is to be human and that he's proud of me for the moral system I came up with on my own.

We're actually like... Super close. So... Am I schizophrenic or are you?

Was christianity supposed to be directly related to judaism? (Like the bible being a replacement of the torah or smth)

My inspiration for this meme imgflip.com/i/aoj275 was how people who don’t accept the Word of God, no matter how much evidence is given proving the Bible to be truth, they don’t except it and just say it’s false.

We respect the beliefs of others and know jesus was real, we just don't believe in God or think on jesus as a divinity, that's all

I could, if you want, prove the existence of God and the Christian faith logically and make a valid argument. if you would like
