Really the Bible is in and of itself not just one but many historical documents.
It compiles four separate historical witness accounts of the earthly life of Jesus Christ. Four different historical witness accounts documenting the same thing in any other situation would be treated as irrefutable but people really just don't wanna believe in the Bible.

The Bible is a set of historical documents, not everything that happens in the Bible, much like with the rest of history, is applicable to us in the modern day. As Flick7 describes in other replies, it was a Jewish cultural thing of the era. What God has asked us to do has changed, even within the timespans described in the Bible.
Saying "it's a sin" is a misinterpretation of the passage. It WAS wrong according to this one story that was written not necessarily as a message to us in the modern day.

What is a sin and what isn't depends on what God has asked a given people to do at a given time. If you knew anything about Bible scholars and what they talk about, you would know the Bible has documents from a massive range of time and a large range of peoples, each with different cultures and needs.
