I hate to be that one guy, but... ErM aKsHuLy, the concept of a number that, when multiplied by itself, would be negative, has been around for a while. If I remember right, when this one guy brought forward the idea, it was considered ridiculous, and Descartes called them "imaginary" and the term stuck. So, they didn't like the idea of it for a while, but imaginary numbers actually are quite useful in a lot of areas like engineering.☝️🤓

HS Calculus student here, can confirm that imaginary numbers are indeed on some actual nonsense. Just had to do a brief assessment today where we had to graph the derivatives of rational functions (basically draw a funny curved line using long stupid math equation that involves a damned fraction) and part of one problem involved square roots pretty heavily.

You cannot take the square root of a negative number in math; that is what an imaginary number would be considered. no math concept since Algebra II used imaginary numbers. They really don't do all that much. :/
