Cause the cartoons are antropomorphized, and therefore given the human consciousness that constitutes the protections that humans ought to have. Not that all abuse towards animals is acceptable, but eating them is certainly allowable. The real question is why we won't let people cut their babies to pieces in their cradles, but they can do it while they're in the womb.
