In the decades since many African states won their independence, trophy hunting has proven to be an effective, market-based tool to raise revenue and create economic incentives for wildlife conservation and sustainable development. This effectiveness is internationally recognized by respected agencies and institutions including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,[2] the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization,[3] the World Bank,[4] and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.[5] As part of holistic conservation programs, trophy hunting enables African nations to practice conservation at landscape scales while improving the lives and livelihoods of rural and indigenous peoples in a way that reduces dependence on foreign aid and philanthropy. It also helps achieve the U.S. foreign policy goal of African economies that thrive, prosper, and control their own destinies.[6]

But in the end trophy hunters still just have a need to get thier kill on from a safe distance, with a high powered rifle, to get one more stuffed head on the wall. If trophy hunters want my respect I'd like to see a stuffed head on the wall of a Hyena say, after the trophy hunter has stalked it and killed it bare hands with a knife maybe, really got into it and felt that primal yum they get when they pull the trigger.

But they won't do that.

"Yeah, I remember the safari when I took down that hippo by wrestling it and choking it out that's now on my wall serving as decoration"

Yeah right.

An op-ed piece by a hunting org advocating the incentivizing of the extermination of the last of endangered elephants for some minute profit off of selfies of some wannabe heir to the crown of the lord of the deplorables waving an elephant tail as the key to conserving them?

Really?

What part of "elephants are endangered" did you not understand?

Trophy hunting kills trophy animals. That's literally its intent. That it's purpose. That's what it's supposed to do. That's it by design.

That's why all the record setters are from a century ago. The biggest elephants. The longest tusks. The biggest rhinos. One with a 5 foot long horn. The biggest elk. The biggest racks. The biggest crocodiles. The biggest great white sharks... The biggest everything doesn't occur anymore, that's because they've been wiped out.

Smaller or even non-tusked elephants in Asia are pretty common, and now it's happening with African elephants as well.
There were 10 million African elephants a 100 years ago, there's 415,000 today. And only 40,000 Asian elephants.

10 million trophies is a lot. The number of elephants left over, not so much.

The elephants were hunted to near extinction for the ivory by illegal traders and poachers, I know you already know that trophy hunting protect endangered species and the targets are old or sick members of the packs. It also brings millions of dollars into the nations that host the hunting. Human industralization and expansion is why we don't see many record breaking animals anymore, and has nothign to do with trophy hunting today.

They're. being. exterminated.

I couldn't give a rat's ass if they were being extirpated by the spaghetti noodles industry.
Piano keys, mounted heads on the wall, selfies with tails by rich entitled somethings... killed is killed.

I didn't even read this before:

"the targets are old or sick members of the packs."

No, millionaires don't goes to cull old runts. They're going after big bulls or big females in their prime.

"Human industralization and expansion is why we don't see many record breaking animals anymore, and has nothign to do with trophy hunting today."

That doesn't even make any sense, let alone is anything akin to remotely true.
It's called evolution. Go ahead, look up why tusks have been disappearing with successive generations of Asian and now African elephants.

Also while you're at it, check out what happened to elephant in Uganda after the Mass slaughter. The culture of what were the leftover orphans changed.
Also check out has been happening in South Africa with young bulls attacking and even killing rhinos. Find out the causes and the solutions.

But you're not going to, so.....
Basically in Uganda during whatever strife in the early 80s, almost all the adults were wiped out for their tusks. The orphans that survived formed huge skittish herds, different from the usual elephant lineage based groupings, devoid of elder females to teach them their ways.

In South Africa, hunters killed so many big bull elephants that they weren't any to teach the younger ones (upon hitting puberty, males leave the herd and go solitary or form groups with other solo males) that rhinos aren't other elephants to be sparred with, and also to temper their tempers. So they saw rhinos as rivals and just pummeled them to death with what would have been basic sparring with other elephants learning how to fight or establish their place in the hierarchy within the group.
The solution is to bring in seasoned bulls from afar to discipline them.

Like I said bro, your life and my would would not be effected in anyway. We wouldn't even notice they are gone.

No, it's not like you said.

That is what I been trying to tell these lunatic left wingers, even if trump wins it'll only be 4 years. please tell your buddies that it won't be the end of the world if trump wins, he'll be gone and forgotten , like Bill Clnton, Nixon, Obama, and every other President. Same thing with elephants bro, when they are gone , who the f cares in the big picture. Life goes on. (probably)

You know what, if elephants disappeared off the face of the earth , you wouldn't even know it. Same thing with rhinos, great white sharks, lions, tigers and polar bears. Species die off all the time, naturally and unnaturally. Crying about it is not going to make a difference. Is it sad sure, would my life or your life change in any way if they disappeared over night.. no. not at all.

Actually we would... and have. There's a reason why those are all considered keystone species.

Paw paws, avocados, Osage orange, honeylocust, Joshua trees... these and others are dependent on very large mammal herbivores for seed dispersal. Their dwindling after the extinction of Ice Age megafauna is not exactly accidental. Mammoths and mastodons as well as giant ground sloths and other such animals not only were important for reseeding these plants, they also help transport huge amounts of organic 'fertilizer' far and wide, enriching soil.

They reduced overhead woodland clutter and opened them up to allow sunlight to reach understory plants, created forest clearings to help diversify the environment. The conversion of steppe grassland into woodland after their disappearance thousands of years ago meant less grazing for the very horses and cattle civilization is built on.

They can find water and dig deeper to access it more so than any other animals, leaving behind waterholes and wallows other species are dependent on. This means a lot in arid areas or during droughts.

Get rid of extant elephants and you would likewise get the same sort of cascade effect.

Predators keep populations in check, preventing mass starvation when their prey base exceed carrying capacity as well as weed out the sick and the weak. Just look at what happened in Yellowstone when just two packs of gray wolves were released into it in the 90s. The transformation was not just dramatic, it was totally unexpected.
(I just found out a few days ago that THAT is what spearheaded the recent rewilding movement throughout the world)

Wipe them out just so that some nobody can compensate for his genetic 'shortcomings' by waving a tail in the air?
Naah.

Elephants dig holes so other animals can drink water, so what, do you live in Africa? Do you depend on elephant plowing out water holes to drink water from? No ? You're in America , with the rst of us? Okay then , theit habits don't effect you or me or anyone else in America. Like I said. Stop using elephants to justifiy your hatred for Trump's kids, cut out the middle man and just say you hate them, okay, at this point in my life I don't need a bunch of shallow reasons. Its fine you hate them, I don't care.

Not at all, I seen both candidates do piss poorly in the debate. I wasn't impressed at all. But it seems to have effected you to the point you are crying about elephants for some weird reason. I think it is kind of funny.
