Also, while the American Dollar can go a long way in most of the world, it won't be so in Russia, especially Moscow. It is pricey to start with, and many venues will charge extra from foreign visitors.
Did you read the book yourself? Outside of the love story, it doesn't paint a pretty picture. A lot of the gruesome events are true, which is why the book was banned in the Soviet Union.
I'm sure you could have a good time there, especially if you like history and museums and architecture. But stick to Moscow and St. Petersburg unless you're going with experienced and well trusted local guides.

I’d like to see both of those but I’d love to see some more areas that I probably shouldn’t. I understand about money, I lived in Europe 3 years and well Ive lived in lot of places and traveled a lot. I’m not the typical American who needs a lot of comforts when I go somewhere different. I’m looking into a tour company right now. It’s just more expensive that way. It will be worth it. I’ve always had a fascination with that part of the world.
Tours may seem expensive, but they may actually save you money. You know exactly what your costs are with them. Russians will try to rip you off any chance they get - and more so if you're an American (the more decent the people, the more they try to rip us off). Make sure to always negotiate the price ahead of time. Don't ask how much something is, tell them first how much you're willing to pay for it (start low).
