Unfortunately i don't know the answer. I had this happen to me a couple of weeks ago. I submitted a meme and had a comment almost instantaneously, yet, it didn't show as featured on my end.

Maybe it's aliens :)

I'm curious, because a user asked me, if someone can see their meme if it isn't featured yet! I told the person no! Thanks very much for your support! It's appreciated! :)

I wondered that too. And, after it happened to me I really wondered if that was the case. I've tested this, though, and logged out and looked at my memes not being logged in. The ones not featured didn't show up.

Perhaps it's a fluke. I have no clue :)
