Putin can't stop the oligarchs and the military because they control all the wealth and power of Russia. They can kill Putin just like they killed Prigozhin or Navalny.
His abrupt collapse of the USSR led to shortage of food. Mix that with an economically incompetent successor (Yeltsin), and you've got lots of hunger. USSR gave up on communism 15 years before it collapsed. And the Glasnost and Perestroika made it pretty much as "free" as most countries at the time.
But Gorby wanted to end USSR because it was a symbol of evil. Doing so left every former Republic in an economic crisis.
Putin doesn't rig elections. He wins them fairly. If I was Russian, and I had to pick between an environmentalist, a communist, and a semi-authoritarian man who's kept the country from collapsing for the past twenty years, I'd vote for the third option too.
And there's no proof that he killed Navalny. It's usually the oligarchs and military leaders such as Surovikin who take out political opposition.
