Between 1914 and 1948, the British promised the territory to Muslims. It is called Mandatory Palestine. Yes, although the British owned the land, they let the Palestinians rule themselves. The government was run by a Muslim. However, there was a separate Muslim and Jewish legislature in Mandatory Palestine. So basically, the Muslims ruled themselves and the Jews ruled themselves, but the supreme ruling religion was Islam. Muslims and Jews lived with each other peacefully. There was never any violence. Then, the British cu off a small piece of Mandatory Palestine and allowed it to become a sovereign Jewish state known as Israel. They gave the remaining land the Palestine. Both were now independent. However, Muslims living in Israel were mistreated, and as a result Palestine resorted to the same tactics within their own territory. Soon, the Israelis gathered an army and invaded Palestine. by 1967, Israel was about as big as Palestine, meaning that it had taken almost half of Palestine's territory. They continued doing this for decades until the Second Intifada, when peace was established. By then, Palestine was no longer a sovereign nation. It was part of Israel. However, Israel allowed the Palestinians to rule themselves with restrictions. Palestine's territory was separated into two areas. West Bank, and Gaza. West Bank was larger and had more people. It also had control of the Jerusalem, which is a significant city to all Abrahamic religions. Israelis who wanted Jerusalem started to settle in areas inside the West Bank. These settlers were often violent against Palestinians. They were allowed to keep guns for "self-defense", while the Palestinians weren't. Whenever protests happened, these settlers would become violent and shoot at protesters. Palestinians were unjustly killed by these settlers. These settlers were usually let go with a slap on the wrist by the judicial system. On top of this, many Palestinian neighborhoods were bulldozed because "The houses were not legally registered". Guess what happened to the land? It was used to create more Israeli settlements. Soon, groups like Hamas started to act violently against Israeli oppression. In response, Israel started placing IDF soldiers near Palestine. The IDF often raided Palestinian territory to find "Hamas terrorists". These raids happen every few days. Usually, 2 or three bystanders are killed in these raids. In 2014, violence between the two groups increased.
