[1 of 2] When witnessing about Christ to those in the religion of Judaism, you may hear them say Christians believe in three Gods, but Jews have only one. Jewish people choke on the idea of the Trinity, though a quick explanation shows it is not an issue. In fact, even Jesus taught that there is only one God: Christ quoted Deuteronomy 6:4 from the Jewish (and Christian) Old Testament when questioned by a scribe who asked Him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?”; Jesus answered, “The most important one is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.’ ” So, Christ certainly supported there being only one God. And we can reciprocate with this challenging question for a Jewish person: Who is Scripture talking about in your—and Christian’s—Old Testament book of Genesis (1:26), when God says, "Let us make man in our image." Genesis uses the Hebrew word “Elohim,” which means a plural number. As a pastor who travels frequently throughout America and also to many nations around the world, (for conferences, interviews, and other public speaking), I talk with a diverse population. One common, misinformed, and alarming misconception is presented to me by people everywhere, and it is because they do not investigate this monumentally important claim that has them clinging to a completely false hope: Men and women all around the planet rely on their ticket to a pleasant eternity being their status a “relatively good person,” or “fairly good person." But that doesn't make you a Christian. Contrary to that tragic delusion, Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father [God in heaven] except through Me.” We have all broken God's law, whether it's lying, stealing, lusting, practicing idolatry by loving things or people more than God, breaking other commandments, or all of the above. Just one of those sins against our Creator is the constant self-focused idol worship of our modern society. According to God’s Word in the Bible, anything can become our idol, including money, possessions, television, other entertainment, a hobby, another person, or even ourselves. When we get preoccupied with something to point where that obsession is more important than our relationship with God, it is idol worship. WHAT IS THE BUDDHIST RELIGION OF JAINISM? [2 of 2] Jesus talked about the Jewish Pharisees forcing their followers to perform prescribed works as the way to supposedly reach a pleasant afterlife, the same sort of works that today’s Jainism (an offshoot of Buddhism) holds their people to. What did Christ say about people who force followers to perform manmade tasks as the supposed ticket to heaven? He called the Pharisees what they were: fools and hypocrites. Here is Jesus addressing the Pharisees in Matthew 23:15 and 27:"Woe to you, blind guides! You go over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are…; You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside, but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of impurity.” The Pharisee’s rules where false teachings, useless burdens put on people. Completely contrary to what the Pharisees prescribed, Jesus had the people follow Him, promising this at the end of Matthew 11: "Come to Me…you will find rest for your souls. WHAT IS THE BUDDHIST RELIGION OF JAINISM? [1 of 2] “Jain” simply means “conqueror,” and “ism” is a “doctrine, cause, or theory,” so a Jainist is a “conqueror from the bondage of this world.” That foundational belief of Jainism sounds like the Hindu idea that we all must escape the bonds of reincarnation, life’s supposed cycle of continuous birth and death which is caused by our bad karma built up in previous lives. The similar views make sense because Jainism is another spin-off from Buddhism, which came out of Hinduism. The works-based aspect of Jainism—the same, tired, old claim that we all must work our own way to heaven—is similar to the beliefs and practices of Jewish leaders during the time Jesus walked the earth. Christ had to deal with the Pharisees and all their onerous, manmade rules and traditions that they relentlessly put on the Jewish people. The Pharisees came up with crazy decrees, like not spitting at the ground on the Sabbath. Why in the world would that matter? Well, having the right trajectory, your spit might hit the dirt with a strong enough force to roll through the dust; thus, you would be plowing a tiny trough—how dare you work on the Sabbath. WHAT IS A MODERN DAY ECLECTIC WITCH? All witchcraft involves the same evil occult practices, but like a New Age follower, an “eclectic” witch collects whatever practices he or she likes from a variety of different occult cultures and traditions, spell work, and rituals. From my experience in the New Age movement, before being saved, that certainly sounds like a New Age version of witchcraft. As was outlined in our study, "New Age & The Last Days Deception," those involved with New Age are in the driver's seat of man-made beliefs. Devotees are told they can pick from whatever religion they want, just making it up as they go. It's the cafeteria plan of belief systems. A follower can grab a little Buddhism, sprinkle on some Hindu practices, and then add a solid helping of psychology, followed by dashes of self-help, and even Christianity.
