Liberals? You mean those pampered quinoa and kale eating upper middle class millennials who are guilt-tripping over their "white privilege" and want everyone else to feel guilty along with them? Sport, that isn't what being liberal is about.
2 ups, 8y
Nah, my bad, I meant the ones who want everybody to get a trophy and don't want anyone to feel bad. That's MY definition.

We do need standard rules of engagement.

Agreed. I think it is useful as long as it doesn't get in the way of discussing important issues.

Political correctness is just words used not to offend anyone. You just need to find words other than curses, slurs, and other offensive language, and you can debate with people AND be seen as a respectful individual.

"PC" is a term used by conservative/religious people that have no regard for what is morally opposed to what they believe, even if it's not harmful to them.

For instance some may say it's "PC" to support gay marriage. I would say it's the people's right to be married if they want to and it has no bearing on anyone else. It's all "Life liberty and pursuit of happiness" right?

Or it's "PC" to stand against bad cops. Huh? You want bad cops running around shooting unarmed/fleeing assailants? I respect police but they are here to PROTECT AND SERVE. If they aren't doing their job correctly don't we as citizens deserve better?

Or it's "PC" to support equal rights for _________. (fill in the blank with your favorite group) Well, all I can say is I hope those that don't like this are not a minority group in the future and wonder where all the support is for them.

The list goes on and on with how people can be "PC" and how those that aren't "PC" hate it....but the real issue for me is when people say and do things to intentionally NOT be "PC" as if to make a statement. Donald Trump is a perfect example. Again, I hope the groups he is alienating don't someday become the powerful. Trump, his supporters, and those like him will be in a vulnerable position with little sympathy from the folks that were "PC" in the past.

Except all those are civil right's issues, except for the bad cop example. None of those have anything to do with PC. People just call them PC to get the PC people to help them. As for Donald Trump, he's just an example of how to be an asshole and get away with it. Trump has been quoted saying he could shoot someone and not be hurt in the polls. And he's probably right. Please Excuse my rambling

But those that oppose those things don't see them as civil rights issues...they see them as PC whiny liberal agenda

Well, the words you use are not as important as their meanings. I know that the difference between people that use "offensive" language to get their point across and those who do it to offend people. (A subset that is unfortunately very large.) I just use PC in order to show other people that I respect them, since it can be very hard to distinguish between offensive language and offensive intent.

Yes but "retard" is offensive to them, and I, for one, prefer to address people with terms that will not make them feel like they are pieces of crap.

Out of curiosity, how many "retards" have you asked that question to? Are they offended by it, or are you offended by it? They might claim it is offensive to them, when really, they've just been told it's a bad word. Who decided that "bitch" was a bad word? Bitch is just supposed to mean female dog, nothing more. Hell is a place, not a swear. Ass a donkey or mule, not a mean word. Retarded means they have a mental condition where they are slower learners, nothing more. You see, people take words and deem them bad, but the words themselves are only bad if you decide they are.

What question did I ask? Of course people take words and deem them bad, and words people deem as offensive are offensive to them. I don't use "retard" because society has deemed it offensive, and it is much easier to simply not use it so that people aren't offended, than to change what people think the word means.

If everyone thought like that, society would not advance. Did Martin Luther King sit back and decide not to change anything because it was easier? No, he stood up for what he believed in. You must have courage to go against the flow.

Yes, and I will go against the flow when it is something worth doing. I do not on PCness because it is pointless. If the "flow" is flowing toward hate and evil, I will speak out against it. Precisely why I am doing so in defense of political correctness. PC is flowing forward acceptance and non-offensive language, so going against it would be to speak out against acceptance. I apologize, I communicated unclearly.

If PC is a way of acceptance, then I'm a republican conservative Trump-lover. All PC does is give people an excuse to shout at others when they use a bad word. PC over-simplifies things to a point where everyone is babied. The real world sucks. People aren't going to be a bunch of PC ninnies. Growing up in a PC environment won't prepare you for the real world. And non-offensive? I would rather be called retarded than special.
0 ups, 8y,

Well, extreme PC does that, but I just talk to everyone like they are a normal human being that deserves my respect. As for "preparedness for the real world," we have people like you to do that.
