It's typically frozen condensation on roads. Since it forms in the dust layer, it often mixes with dust to turn grey/black. Regardless, you can't see it. I was driving home from work last night and hit a patch of it that I couldn't see. Slid right through an intersection, over the opposite side of the road and into a ravine. Couple minutes later came up on a blocked road from a car who slowed down and slid back down. Hooked up a strap and dragged her backwards all the way up that hill. Drove around 3 other vehicles who slid off on an almost flat road. When I finally got home 2 hours later (I only live 10 miles away), I told my boss I was just going to work from home today. I'll wait until physics is more in my favor thank you.

Its big....but enormous amounts of it are unpopulated, and except for major cities the roads are farther apart. It still takes literal mountains of grit. Each city will have several depots that are just piles of grit as large as hills. In a bad winter, we'll still run out though.

Sorry to hear that. It must be quite scary during the bad winters. I know that in Finland, because they have crazy temperatures during the winter, they make it really hard to get a driving licence. They want to make sure everyone is completely competent in icy conditions. Anything like that in the US?

By "grit", do you mean gravel? I hate areas that use that. First, it results in a lot of pitted and chipped windshields. Second, even after the snow/ice melts, the gravel remains. I did a sudden stop on a patch of gravel (otherwise, a dry clean road), slid into a curb, and destroyed my front wheel causing $500 damage (in 1994 dollars).

No, grit as in salt or whatever it is. And that sucks man :/ insurance?

Yes, insurance covered it, but it was still a pain in the ass. Salt is bad because it rusts out your car. Here they use a liquid called mag chloride which isn't bad, but it is ineffective below a certain temperature.

However, during a Christmas tree lighting, Darius Rucker sang "White Christmas" and many of the sorry blacklivesmatter protesters took to Twitter and other social media demanding Rucker appologize for singing it and figured the song to be racist, even though it has nothing to do with skin color.
