The bro thing is like a nickname just like "hey dude" , "what up stud" and so on. Less formal. The "bra" or "bruh" term is a hawaiin colloqual term and adapted to the surfing genre and later co-opted by the stoners. Its when you actually refer to a friend as "brother" it is a bond between friends.
