The benefit of text only is that people would be more likely to actually click the link and upvote the person who made the meme (rather than just only upvoting my comment).

The benefit of pictures is that it might spark more interest overall.

I clicked on the link to upvote the memes. I think the pictures do help, but I can see your point about the text only making them actually go to the page.

If it's any consolation, I thought it was a very poor film. :)

I just love his face. It cracks me up. And it's a good message, too - it's true that life is hard.

I took it as broader than that (not just alcoholism). To me it's like he's saying he's proud of holding it together (thinking of sobriety as general levelheadedness), but it's funny because... he's obviously not holding it together. And the cat's face is so funny. :)

But I guess you could ask the meme-maker if alcoholism was in mind.
